DALLAS, Pa. (Oct. 16, 2015) – Junior
Melaney Heald (Georgetown, Del.) factored into three winning performances to propel the Widener University women's swimming team to a 127-75 victory over Misericordia in the opening dual meet of the season for both schools on Friday evening. The Pride won eight of 11 events to begin the 2015-16 campaign on a high note.
Heald captured the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events with times of 55.69 seconds and 2:02.19, respectively, to lead the way for Widener. In addition, she swam on the winning 200-yard freestyle relay which hit the wall in 1:43.76 and also included sophomore
Christine Kunzler (Livermore, Calif.), freshman
Kaylin Augustine (Wyoming, Pa.) and freshman
Lauren Griffith (Doylestown, Pa.).
Freshman
Alyssa Myers (Broomall, Pa.) was also a double winner individually by capturing first-place finishes in the distance freestyle events. She recorded times of 5:38.87 in the 500 and 11:37.73 in the 1,000.
Other notable performances were made by Kunzler and Griffith. Kunzler won the 50 free in 25.67, while Griffith was victorious in the 100 back in 1:04.17.
Widener (1-0) will host its first dual meet of the season when it entertains Scranton on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 1:00 p.m.
