Men's Lacrosse Drops Close Game To #1 Salisbury, 7-5

(boxscore)
Widener scored two goals in the final period of play, but it was not enough to defeat top-ranked Salisbury, 7-5, in Salisbury, MD.

Salisbury scored two unassisted goals in the first seven minutes of the game. With just under three minutes remaining in the first period, senior Johnny Casey (Glenside, PA) scored his first of two goals unassisted.

The Pride's defense held off Salisbury's attackers for the next eight minutes until Evan Hammersly scored his seventh goal of the season. Widener freshman Tim Taylor (Philadelphia, PA) scored his fifth and sixth goals of the year at the end of the second and start of the third to bring the score to a 4-3 deficit.

Taylor leads the Pride in goals and is tied for first with six points.

In the fourth quarter, Widener (1-1) scored two goals to Salisbury's one. Casey scored a man-up goal with 10 minutes left after Salisbury (2-2) was down as a result of unnecessary roughness. Two minutes later, senior Ryan Eidenshink (Elkins Park, PA) scored his first goal of the season to bring the Pride within 6-5. Neither team was able to put the ball in the net for the next seven minutes until Salisbury's Brady Dashiell scored an unassisted goal for the final.

Timothy Winslow (Newbury, MA) picked up seven ground balls and fellow junior Andrew Vogel (Broomall, PA) gathered five. Junior goalkeeper Mac Nestler (Chatham, NJ) made 12 saves and Casey ended with eight shots.

Next Saturday, Widener travels to take on Swarthmore at 1:00 pm as part of the "320 Challenge."
