Chip Zawoiski scored 4 TD's and surpassed 1000 yards rushÂing for the season while leading Widener to a 50-27 romp over Delaware Valley.Â
Actually the score doesn't reflect the steady play of the Pioneer defense; 20 of Delaware Valley's 27 points were scored late in the game, when reserves had already replaced starters. Delaware's first touchdown came on an intercepted pass to open the scoring in the first quarter, so in reality the inexorable Widener defense recorded anÂother shutout.Â
After Delaware Valley drew first blood, the Pioneer offensive unit exploded for 21 first quarter points on a Zawoiski 4 yard run, a 40 yard pass from Walters to Carter, and a 5 yard scamper by Mark Draft.· In the second quarter it was more of the same. The relentless offense pounded Delaware Valley for 2 more scores, both runs by Zawoiski. In the first half the offense was aided by five punt returns by Steve Warrington and a taut defensive unit that continually rendered them great field posiÂtion.Â
The half-time intermission didÂn't seem to disrupt the Widener scoring machine, as Walters dove over from 1 yard out and Zawoiski rambled in from the 14 yard line for his 4th TD of the day. This made it 50-7 in favor of Widener, at the end of the third quarter. Delaware Valley manÂaged to shrow 3 scoring passes in the 4th quarter to close out the scoring. Once again the kicker, John Ferko, converted each PAT, the only exception being a bad snap in the 3rd quarter, causing holder Mike Siebert to throw for the 2 point conversion.Â
Mistakes didn't plague the Pioneers this day. They lost no fumbles and were only penalized 5 times for 50 yards. However, the QB's did throw 2 intercepÂtions, which probably could have been avoided.Â
The defense tied a season high of 5 sacks in one game, 2 being credited to weakside linebacker Ed Fullmer.Â
Injuries haven't played a major part in the pioneer season so far, but last Saturday someone made the mistake of breaking Big Jim "Bubba" Conner's nose.Â
Conner's who stands 6 foot 5 inches and weighs 270 lbs., is expected to be ready this week. The last report out of Delaware Valley said the guy who broke it caught the first plane to Siberia, planning to vacation there until Conner is feeling better.Â
In reference to published reÂports that Widener must run up the score on its' opponents to gain recognition as a playoff contender, head coach Bill ManÂlove said he gets no personal satisfaction out of kicking a weaker team into the ground. He also stated that the main obÂjective of his program is to play good football; winning is only secondary.Â
Looking ahead to the playÂoffs is an added incentive to do well during the season; players and coaches alike should concentrate on winning the regular season games first, beÂcause there is no set pattern or formula for choosing the DiÂvision III playoff teams.Â
