Seth Klein Breaks Completions Record for Football, Which Sees Season End With 50-28 Loss at Del Val

(box score)

Freshman quarterback Seth Klein (Wernersville, PA) broke the school's single-season completions record, but Widener saw its season come to an end in a 50-28 Middle Atlantic Conference loss to Delaware Valley at Doylestown, PA.

Delaware Valley on its first two drives used two long passes from Aaron Wilmer to Lewis Vincent that went 31 and 32 yards. The Pride's defense stopped the home team several times up the middle before Brandon Snyder kicked a 30-yard field goal less than two minutes into the contest for a 3-0 Aggies lead.

Widener's fast-paced offense did it again on the next possession, scoring a touchdown on its opening drive for the fifth straight game. Again, it was Klein engineering the unit that capped the march when senior Terrant Morrison (Smyrna, DE) took a handoff and raced for the left pylon for a 20-yard score and a 7-3 Pride lead with 10:35 to play in the first.

Rasheed Bailey took his turn on center stage for the Aggies on consecutive plays. He blocked a punt that was recovered at the Pride 32 yard line and then hauled in a touchdown reception from Wilmer with 7:32 left in the quarter for a 10-7 Delaware Valley lead.

Klein did not panic on the next drive, completing a 16-yard pass to Connor Schlegel and then a 31-yard touchdown pass to junior All-America Anthony Davis (Upland, PA). The latter avoided several tacklers and worked his way inside the left pylon for a 14-10 Pride lead with 5:41 remaining in the first.

Delaware Valley (7-3, 6-3 MAC) regained the lead at 17-14 just over three minutes into the second quarter. Bailey again showed his athleticism by catching Wilmer's pass over the middle and racing 21 yards for the score.

Senior safety Colin Masterson (Swarthmore, PA) has made many big plays in his career and he added another with an interception at the Aggies 40 yard line. Morrison capped the drive with his second touchdown, a nine-yard run with 5:25 remaining for a 21-17 Pride lead.

Widener (6-4, 6-3), which for the third straight year entered this game with a chance to win at least a share of the conference title, then got another touchdown for the half's biggest lead thanks to an efficient 74-yard drive that took under two minutes. Klein again showed great poise as he found a leaping Davis at the left pylon for a 10-yard touchdown catch with 29 seconds left in the half and a 28-17 Pride advantage.

Klein in the opening half, which featured five lead changes, completed 19-of-24 passes for 179 yards.

The Aggies on the first drive in the second half took advantage of penalties and a questionable fourth-down spot to close to 28-23 with 10:10 to play in the third. Wilmer scored on a six-yard keeper up the middle, but junior Kevin Burns (Collingdale, PA) blocked the extra point.

Darren Parrott gave Del Val the lead with 4:10 to play in the third by scampering eight yards to make it 29-28 for the home team after the two-point conversion failed. Parrott earlier in the drive had a 47-yard reception from Wilmer to the Pride 20 yard line.

The Aggies then took a 36-28 lead with 53 seconds left in the third thanks to the explosiveness of Kyle Schuberth. He took a handoff, darted up the middle and went untouched 65 yards for the touchdown.

Del Val got the ball back on its 10 yard line looking desperately to get first downs and run clock. They got all that plus Schuberth scoring on a two-yard touchdown run, making it 43-28 Aggies with 5:49 remaining.

Schuberth officially put away the contest with a 59-yard run with 1:43 left for the final.

Klein completed 35-of-55 passes for 308 yards and two scores to give him 285 completions, breaking the school and MAC marks of 282 set last season by Chris Haupt. He also closes the year with 2,809 passing yards, good for fifth best in school history.

Davis amassed 12 catches for 119 yards and two touchdowns. He extended his own school record with 91 receptions this season, moves into second with 31 career touchdown receptions and remains second with 187 career receptions.

Burns ended with 15 tackles for the Pride, who were ranked as high as 15th in the country in the preseason and as high as 24th during the campaign.

Schuberth closed with 26 rushes for 235 yards and Wilmer completed 18-of-30 passes for 310 yards for the Aggies, who outscored the Pride 33-0 in the second half and had 632 overall yards of total offense.

Ken Kenner-English had 17 tackles for the Aggies.
