A more than eventful night of Commonwealth Conference soccer saw senior Matt Parrotta (Torrington, CT) and sophomore Grant Shaffer (Glen Rock, PA) each notch a goal and an assist for Widener in a 3-0 shutout of Lebanon Valley at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.

Lebanon Valley (9-6-3, 3-4-1 CC) was battling for a spot in the conference tournament, but someone forgot to tell Widener (6-8-4, 1-4-3). The Pride opened the scoring at the 11-minute mark when Parrotta fed a great pass to Shaffer, who deposited one inside the right post from 15 yards out for his first career goal.

Widener then benefitted from a crazy play near the end of the half to double its lead. LVC's Kyle Fronk committed a foul roughly 25 yards from net with 1.8 seconds left and everyone waiting for the half to end, leading to a yellow card. Freshman Max Reid (Munich, Germany) had a quick touch on the free kick to sophomore Tori Remondelli (Point Pleasant, NJ), who fired a great shot just inside the right post before time expired for a 2-0 lead and his team-leading seventh goal of the season.

At this point, the Dutchmen were forced to play catch up and were bringing many of their players up the field. This led to Shaffer winning a 50/50 ball at midfield and finding a wide-open Parrotta, who took the great lead pass and buried his second goal of the season to give Widener a 3-0 lead in the 78th minute.

Widener's defense, paced by senior Cody Schulte (White Hall, MD) and junior Troy Czapor (Richboro, PA), played great in helping the home team get its sixth shutout of the year. Senior Jakub Valdner (Bratislava, Slovakia) ended with three saves.

"It was a great way for our team to celebrate the accomplishments of our senior class at the last home game of their career," Widener coach Brent Jacquette said. "It shows what this team is capable of when we consistently play for the full 90 minutes."

Remondelli had three shots to pace Widener. Kevin Doty had four shots and Brian Frasca totaled six saves for Lebanon Valley.

Widener ends its season Saturday at Elizabethtown, starting at 4:30 pm.
