No. 22 Football Cruises to 67-0 Blanking of Misericordia

(box score)

No. 22 Widener blitzed Misericordia for 26 first-quarter points and remained undefeated with a 67-0 Middle Atlantic Conference victory in Dallas, PA.

Widener (3-0, 2-0 MAC) christened the new field turf during the first home football game in Misericordia history on a five-play, 60-yard drive.  The march was punctuated when senior Chris Haupt (Bloomsburg, PA) threw in the flat to sophomore Anthony Davis (Upland, PA), who sprinted down the right sideline for the score and a 7-0 lead just 1:41 into the contest.

The Pride then made it 13-0 on a crazy play with 9:56 left in the period.  Misericordia's Corey Wall dribbled a punt from near midfield and it was picked up by junior Terrant Morrison (Smyrna, DE), who sprinted 62 yards with the gift untouched for the score.

A second offensive drive in the quarter for Widener resulted in a 20-0 lead with 5:05 left that sophomore Couve LaFate (Wilmington, DE) ended on a one-yard touchdown run.  Haupt was the star of the march as he completed all five of his pass attempts for 61 yards, including a 12-yard toss on fourth down to senior Dante Pergolese (Havertown, PA) at the Cougars 15 yard line.

Widener then used an efficient 12-play, 74-yard drive to make it 26-0 with 46 seconds to go in the first quarter.  Freshman Robert Getz (Kunkletown, PA) ended it on a one-yard run as part of a period in which the Pride had a 195-41 edge in total offense, 152-29 in passing yards and 10-1 in first downs.

Haupt completed 12-of-15 passes in the first quarter.

Davis reeled in a one-handed catch on a 61-yard bomb from Haupt early in the second quarter to make it 32-0.  Getz bullied his way in from two yards midway through the second for a 39-0 cushion.  Haupt got his third touchdown pass of the half by hooking up with junior Jermaine Quattlebaum (Upper Marlboro, MD) on a 13-yard strike, making it 46-0.

Davis and LaFate each had touchdown catches from Haupt in the third quarter and junior Tevin Campbell (Brookhaven, PA) added a 14-yard scoring run in the fourth for the final.

Haupt once again had a day with 432 passing yards, the fourth-most prolific number in school history.  He completed 27-of-41 passes and equaled his career high with five touchdown passes for Widener, which amassed a 668-170 advantage in total offense and a 32-9 edge in first downs.

Davis is not to be forgotten with seven catches for 165 yards and three touchdowns.  Campbell added eight carries for 84 yards and a score.

Sophomore Brandon Harper (Clementon, NJ) paced the defense with nine tackles and two for a loss with junior Dylan Ditmer (Exton, PA) adding seven tackles for the Pride, who held the Cougars to 2-for-15 on third-down conversions.

Jeffrey Puckett completed 8-of-22 passes for 69 yards with Ben Camacho and Kevin Bagasevich each getting seven tackles for Misericordia (0-3, 0-2), which is in its first season of varsity football.

Widener next Saturday returns home against Wilkes, beginning at 1:00 pm.
