Men's Soccer Ends In 1-1 Tie With Lycoming

(boxscore)
Widener put up a good team effort, but could not come out of tonight's Commonwealth Conference game with a win as it ended in a 1-1 tie with Lycoming at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium during Widener's Homecoming Weekend.

The end of the first half left the scoreboard tied 0-0. Widener took three shots and Lycoming put up four—three of which came from senior Charlie Vess.

In the second half, the Pride (4-6-2, 1-1-1 CC) came out looking to score the first goal of the game, putting up three shots in the first five minutes. The Warriors (4-4-2, 1-1-1) were the first to score, however, at 52:41 when Vess took a shot from about 20 yards.

The clock was winding down for the Pride when DJ DiPaola (Havertown, PA) was rewarded a penalty shot with just above 17 minutes remaining. He put it into the top-right corner of the net to even the score 1-1.

Zac Furia (Morton, PA) had a chance to put Widener in the lead when he just missed a header on a ball inserted by Joe Brydges (Philadelphia, PA) after a Lycoming foul. Furia was part of another Pride-chance when he fed Matt Montera (New City, NY) who barely missed to the left. With one minute remaining in regulation, Vess missed a shot to the left and the game was sent into the first period of overtime.

Lycoming put up three shots in the first period of overtime, but the score remained tied and was sent into a second period of overtime.

Both teams put up a shot that could have ended the game, but neither were successful.

DiPaola took three shots with Brydges, Tori Remondelli (Point Pleasant, NJ) and Matt Parrotta (Torrington, CT) each taking two.

Jakub Valdner (Bratislava, Slovakia) played the full 110 minutes, allowing just the one goal and making two saves.

Widener next hosts Stevenson on Tuesday in another Commonwealth Conference match, beginning at 7:00 pm.
