Football Handed 56-28 Loss at No. 8 Delaware Valley

(box score)

Widener's bid for a Middle Atlantic Conference title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament fell one game short with a 56-28 loss at eighth-ranked Delaware Valley in Doylestown, PA.

The Pride (8-2, 6-2 MAC) had the second-highest scoring offense in the nation and needed just four plays on their first drive to take a 7-0 lead.  Sophomore Terrant Morrison (Smyrna, DE) took a handoff and sprinted 46 yards almost untouched down the left sideline for the score just 3:20 into the game.

Delaware Valley (10-0, 8-0) responded on its next drive with a nine-play, 56-yard drive to level the score, 7-7.  Kyle Schuberth took a handoff and barreled through several defenders up the middle on a four-yard touchdown burst with 8:11 to go in the first quarter.

A 34-yard punt from Widener senior Kevin Huelster (Mount Laurel, NJ) was downed at the Del Val four yard line and the defense came through with a three and out.  This included a big third-down tackle from junior Joe Wojceichowski (Riverside, NJ) on a pass across the middle at the 13 yard line.

A short punt to the 47 yard line was just was the Pride needed and they cashed in on the drive's first play.  Junior Chris Haupt (Bloomsburg, PA) got plenty of protection and found senior Cedrick Clayton (Cinnaminson, NJ) over the middle for the score and a 14-7 Widener lead with 2:31 to play in the first quarter.

The Aggies again squared the contest, 14-14, on a drive that spilled into the second quarter.  The home team marched 82 yards in a drive that closed on a 24-yard touchdown slant from Aaron Wilmer to Lewis Vincent just 34 seconds into the period.

Huelster did his magic again by having a punt downed at the two yard line and it forced the Aggies into a short drive.  Del Val then made the mistake of punting the ball to the incomparable sophomore All-American Laquan Robinson (Chester, PA), who raced 51 yards for his second punt return touchdown of the season and fifth career.  This gave Widener a 21-14 lead with 6:04 left in the half.

The ensuing kickoff played to Widener's benefit as a fumble on a short kick was recovered by sophomore Marquis Stewart (Elkton, MD) at the Del Val 24 yard line.  Three plays later, Morrison scored on a two-yard sweep with 5:22 left in the half for a 28-14 Pride cushion.

The Aggies got some momentum with 72 seconds left in the first half when Schuberth scored from two yards for his second touchdown run, making it a 28-21 Widener lead.

Huelster had a third punt downed inside the 10 yard line early in the third quarter, but the Aggies went 94 yards in 10 plays to tie the game at 28-28 with 7:51 remaining.  On a drive in which two third downs were converted, Wilmer threw a five-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Neal for the tie.

Wilmer kept his strong playing going on the Aggies next drive to give his squad its first lead, rushing for 27 yards that included an 18-yard keeper with 3:15 left in the third quarter for a 35-28 contest.

The run continued on the next drive when Wilmer found Vincent over the middle on a 61-yard touchdown pass with a 15-yard personal foul penalty added that put the ball at the Widener 16 yard line.  Wilmer ended the drive on a 15-yard pass to Chris Ruiz for a 42-28 contest early in the fourth quarter.

Wilmer continued to be the second half story on the next drive, hooking up with Isaiah Hall on a 13-yard touchdown pass with 12:10 to go for a 49-28 Aggies lead.  Neal added a 40-yard touchdown run with 5:47 left for a 56-28 contest.

Haupt completed 29-of-52 passes for 267 yards and a touchdown.  He moved into eighth place on Widener's single-season passing list with 2,555 yards and third on the career list with 5,610 yards.

Clayton closed with 10 catches for 112 yards and sophomore Dylan Ditmer (Exton, PA) amassed 11 tackles for Widener.

Wilmer completed 17-of-31 passes for 333 yards and four touchdowns for the Aggies, who notched a 580-319 advantage in total offense.  Rodney Blango hauled in six receptions for 122 yards and Vincent added four catches for 121 yards.

The Pride were 7-0 this season entering the game when leading at halftime and had scored at least 50 points in a school-record five straight contests, but came up short of an 18th MAC crown.

Widener will wait to see if it receives an ECAC bowl bid.  The pairings will be announced Monday afternoon.
