Widener's season came to a disappointing end with a tough 4-3 overtime loss at King's in the ECAC South Tournament quarterfinals in Wilkes-Barre, PA.
Joe Bender got No. 1 seed King's on the board in the 18th minute, but freshman Dan Lorenzet (Forest Hill, MD) leveled the match for eighth-seeded Widener in the 57th minute.
The Pride (9-9-3) shortly thereafter grabbed the momentum for a 3-1 lead. Bill James (Perkasie, PA) scored on a direct kick in the 69th minute and assisted on a goal by fellow senior Doug Gabel (Feasterville, PA) 44 seconds later.
Gabel before the match was tabbed second team All-Commonwealth Conference.
The Monarchs (14-1-5) closed to 3-2 in the 83rd minute when Bender netted his second off a loose ball in front. The comeback was completed with 1:35 left in regulation as Cameron Audette ran through the defense and scored.
Audette also lowered the curtain on the game, faking a defender and tallying 5:30 into overtime for just the Pride's fourth loss in their last 10 games.
Audette had three shots and took the only attempt in overtime for the Monarchs, who ended with a 12-9 edge. Tim Kelly made three saves.
Lorenzet took three shots and junior Marty Squicciarini (Lansdale, PA) posted five saves for the Pride.
The loss ends a great season in which Widener upset top-seeded Lebanon Valley, 1-0, in the conference semifinals before falling at No. 8 Messiah in the final. The Pride were making their fourth trip to an ECAC Tournament (1982, 1999, 2002).
