10/13/07 -- Widener held off a game effort by Lebanon Valley for its third straight victory, a 20-13 Middle Atlantic Conference triumph at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.
Widener (4-2, 3-0 MAC) scored on its opening possession of the second half for a 17-7 lead. Senior quarterback Matt Campbell (Broomall, PA) ran nine yards for a first down to the Pride 48 yard line and the squad benefited from a pass interference call at the Dutchmen 28. Campbell ended the drive on a 27-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Kevin Fisher (Abington, MD) with 10:04 left in the third quarter.
The Pride early in the fourth quarter got the ball back when junior TD Davis (Reisterstown, MD) intercepted a pass from Caleb Fick at the LVC 23 yard line. Senior Tom Laurich (Warminster, PA) seven plays later booted his second field goal of the game, a 22-yard kick with 11:22 remaining for a 20-7 contest.
Widener stalled on its next drive, but pinned LVC (1-5, 0-3) deep when senior Robert McHugh (Philadelphia, PA) had his punt downed by freshman EJ Stroman (Red Hill, PA) at the one yard line. The Dutchmen drove 88 yards, but stalled when senior John Martorell (Aston, PA) intercepted a pass in the end zone for a touchback with 5:57 left.
The Dutchmen converted on its next possession when Fick completed a 25-yard scoring pass to Joe Brennan with 4:09 remaining. Andrew Brandt missed the extra point for a 20-13 contest.
Widener had to punt on its next possession and McHugh again was clutch, having his boot downed at the three yard line. He ended the day with seven punts for a 40.6 yard average.
LVC looked for the tying score but only got as far as its 34 yard line before senior Orlando Brown (Wilmington, DE), the reigning MAC Defensive Player of the Week, handed Fick his fourth interception of the day with 35 seconds left.
Campbell completed 17-of-36 passes for 184 yards and one touchdown. Jamie Schild (Fairport, NY) had four catches for 58 yards and fellow senior Mike McFadden (Media, PA) amassed 10 tackles.
Fick completed just 11-of-31 passes for 200 yards and two scores for the Dutchmen, who committed six turnovers. Will Keylor had 11 tackles.
Widener opened the scoring when Brown returned an interception 81 yards for a score with 6:59 to go in the first quarter for a 7-0 lead. LVC countered as Sean Donovan caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from Fick with 3:08 left in the half for a 7-7 tie.
On the ensuing possession, the Pride grabbed a 10-7 lead with 52 seconds remaining on Laurich's 35-yard field goal.
Widener hits the road next Friday to visit FDU-Florham for a 7:00 pm start.
