CHESTER, Pa. – As part of its Women's History Month celebration, Widener Athletics recognizes former women's volleyball standout Meghan Spence, whose defensive dominance cemented her place in the Pride record books.
A libero from 2009–2012, Spence built a career defined by consistency, effort, and remarkable defensive skill. She currently holds the Widener program record for career digs with 2,776, while also ranking sixth all-time in career aces with 141.
Spence's impact was felt immediately as a freshman in 2009, when she finished second in the Commonwealth Conference with more than five digs per set while recording 594 digs. She followed that with another standout sophomore campaign in 2010, leading the Pride with 697 digs and 49 service aces while ranking second in the conference with 5.58 digs per set.
Her junior season in 2011 was one of the most dominant defensive performances in program history. Spence led the Commonwealth Conference with 806 total digs and 6.58 digs per set, finishing more than 250 digs ahead of the next closest player in the league. During that season, she recorded 20 or more digs in 20 matches, including seven straight contests in October.
One of the most memorable performances of her career came in her junior year against DeSales, when she set the Widener single-match record with 55 digs, a mark that highlighted her relentless defensive presence on the court.
Spence's consistency is reflected throughout the Widener record book, where she ranks in the top 10 for single-season digs in every season she competed, including tying the program record with 806 in 2011. She also ranks fourth with 697 digs in 2010, fifth with 679 in 2012, and eighth with 594 in 2009.
Beyond her on-court success, Spence excelled academically as well, earning recognition on the MAC Academic Honor Roll while pursuing a degree in education.
As Widener Athletics continues to celebrate Women's History Month, Meghan Spence's career stands as a testament to dedication, leadership, and the defensive excellence that helped define Pride volleyball during her era.
