Men’s Lacrosse Drop Season Opener Against Swarthmore

Heisman see three goals for the Pride

CHESTER, Pa. - The Widener men's lacrosse team battled hard against Swarthmore for their season opener but were unable to come out on top over the Garnet.The Pride fell to Swarthmore 19-7 and began their season 0-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED AT QUICK STADIUM

Keeping things close in the first quarter, Widener's Nick DiCicco was quick to put the Pride on the board after the Garnet scored in their opening drive. With eight minutes on the clock, Swarthmore's Rex Mabbs put another Garnet goal on the boad but Heisman answered with a goal for the Pride. Swarthmore was able to put three more in and the Pride finished the first quarter down, 5-2.

The Pride came into the second quarter hoping to get their offense moving but were unable to answer the Garnets' five goals. Wesley Sporer found the back of the net for the Pride halfway through the quarter and put the score at 9-3 but the Pride finished the half down 10-3.

Coming out of the second half looking for answers and found some in Connor Heisman who scored two goals back-to-back for the Blue and Gold. With the score at 13-6, Bryant Maits found Sam Haverstrom for a goal, which was swiftly answered by the Garnet's Rex Mabbs. Swarthmore finished the quarter with one more goal and the time ran out with the score sitting at 15-6.

The last quarter saw some aggression, both sides seeing the penalty flag fly. A scoreless two minutes went by and Swarthmore's Ryan Chambliss broke the drought. With 9:45 left in the game, Sam Haverstrom scored again, bringing the score to 18-7 but the Garnet went on to score one last goal, giving the Pride their first loss of the season in a 19-7 victory.

The Pride are back at Quick Stadium to take on Shenandoah. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
