GRANTHAM, Pa. - The Widener softball team came away with a split in its MAC Commonwealth doubleheader against Messiah on Friday at Starry Field.
The Pride fell, 6-4, in the first game, but bounced back to win 2-1 in eight innings in the second game.
The Pride improved to 18-10 overall and 4-4 in MAC Commonwealth play.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST MESSIAH IN GAME 2
- With the game tied at 1 through seven innings, the Pride took the lead in the eighth after Kaylin Johnson scored on a ground out by Sam McCarthy.
- From there, Liz Renavitz recorded a scoreless eighth to secure the win. The first-year starter threw a complete game in which she allowed one earned run on four hits while striking out a career-best 10 batters. The Dunellen, N.J. native ranks first in the MAC Commonwealth in strikeouts looking (35), third in strikeouts (90), and third in innings pitched (91).
- Renavitz also had an RBI single in the seventh in the win. Johnson, Malia Calciano, Mikaela Lovell, and Mikayla Fedele each had a hit for the Pride.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST MESSIAH IN GAME 1
- Down, 4-0, through three innings, the Pride came back to tie the Falcons at 4 in the sixth after scoring one run in the fourth, two runs in the fifth, and one in the sixth. Renavitz had an RBI single in the fourth, Johnson scored on a Becca Tiley fielder's choice and Ally McDowell scored on a McCarthy sacrifice fly in the fifth, and Jalia Lawrence scored on a Bri Milz sacrifice fly in the sixth.
- However, the Falcons scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead and eventually the game.
- Johnson led the Pride at the dish, going 3-for-4. Malia Calciano added two hits in the loss.
- Despite the loss, Fedele pitched a complete game for the pride, allowing four earned runs while striking out three.
UP NEXT
The Pride will hit the road again Monday to face Cedar Crest in a non-conference doubleheader. The first game is set for 3 p.m., with the nightcap to follow at 5.
