Opening Tip
Widener will face Arcadia University in the MAC Commonwealth title game on Saturday, February 23. This is the first finals appearance for the Pride since the 2008-09 season.
Scouting Report
The top defensive team in the conference, the Arcadia Knights enter Saturday's MAC Commonwealth Championship as the #1 seed thanks to a 20-5 regular season. In their semifinal matchup, the Knights bested the Lions of Albright College by a score of 77-73. Josh Scott led the way for Arcadia, dropping 25 points while going 8-9 from the field. Phil Pierfy and Da'Kquan Davis were the other double-digit scorers for the Knights
Davis provides the bulk of the offense for AU, coming into the 'chip as the conference's seventh-best scorer at 16.7 points per game. In two contests against the Pride this year, the sophomore from Philadelphia is averaging 21.5 points and shooting the three at a 41.1 percent clip.
Pierfy mans the middle for Arcadia. The big fella is grabbing 6.2 boards per game and contributes around 14 points per contest. Despite being one of the highest-scoring teams in the MAC Commonwealth, Arcadia shys away from the three-point line, only shooting it from deep 502 times throughout the year and relying heavily on its inside presence. Widener defends the three better than any team in the conference so the Pride will have to find other ways to limit the Knights' offense.
Arcadia's defense is only giving up 68.3 points per game - the lowest in the MAC Commonwealth. Where teams do find moderate success against the Knights is from deep. AU is allowing opponents to knock down the three at a 35.3 percent rate. Widener owns the best three-point shooting percentage in the conference at 36.2 percent and is coming off a 42 percent performance against Hood in the semifinal.
Rubber Match
Arcadia and Widener split the season series this year, with the Pride handing the Knights their first conference loss of the year just 11 days ago. The games were decided by a combined 12 points - a 7-point victory for Arcadia in the first game and a 5-point win for the Pride in the second meeting.
Holding On To The Ball
For the second consecutive season,
Ryan McMahon led the MAC Commonwealth in assist /turnover ratio. The senior is second in the conference in assists per game at 4.4 and is only turning the ball over about 1.7 times per contest.
We've Missed You
Saturday is the first conference championship game for Widener men's basketball in 11 years. In the 2008-09 season, the Pride defeated Elizabethtown for its third consecutive MAC Commonwealth Championship title.
