AUSTIN, Texas (June 1, 2016) – Widener University's
Bob Barnett (Glenolden, Pa.) has been named to the Capital One Academic All-America Division III Baseball Team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The junior outfielder was chosen to the third team after helping the Pride win the Middle Atlantic Conference Tournament title and advance to the NCAA Regionals for the second time in three years this past spring.
Barnett, an engineering major, is receiving the award for the first time and has been a regular starter for the program since his freshman season. He was named to the 2016 ABCA All-Mid-Atlantic Region Third Team last week and is also a two-time All-MAC Commonwealth First Team selection. Barnett led the league with 24 stolen bases this past spring while batting .346 with 55 hits, including 12 for extra bases. He also drove in 33 runs while scoring 41 times. Furthermore, the junior ranked second in the league in runs scored and finished among the top five in the conference in hits and runs batted in.
Barnett is Widener's second student-athlete to be named a Capital One Academic All-American in any sport during the 2015-16 academic year. Softball's
Alie Alkins (Aston, Pa.) made the Capital One Academic All-America First Team eight days ago, while swimmer
Erin Neugebauer (Eden Prairie, Minn.) as well as
Stephen Fortin (Goffstown, N.H.) and
Thomas Zamorski (Frenchtown, N.J.) of the men's cross country and track & field programs are currently eligible to be named Capital One Academic All-Americans over the next few weeks.
