Baseball Splits First Doubleheader of the Season in Raleigh

RALEIGH, N.C. – Widener Baseball suffered a tough loss in game one against the Gettysburg Bullets but bounced back in a strong win against the William Peace Pacers.

The Pride are now 1-1 on the season.

BY THE NUMBERS VS. GETTYSBURG
  • Trae Sanders was solid in his first start going 4.2 innings, striking out two, and allowing three earned runs.
 
  • Kevin Bukowski looked to be in mid-season form, going 2-3 with a single and a triple.
 
  • Brandon Yoder had a solid debut for the Pride, going 1-4 with a single and a stolen base.
 
BY THE NUMBERS VS. WILLIAM PEACE
  • John Najdek was dominant today, throwing 5.0 scoreless innings only allowing four hits and striking out six.
 
  • Kevin Bukowski provided a major boost to the Pride offense, going 1-3 with a three-run home run.
   
HOW IT HAPPENED VS. GETTYSBURG
  • The Pride threatened to score in the top of the first inning after a two out Kevin Bukowski triple but were unable to drive in the run. After a scoreless bottom of the first for Gettysburg, Widener once again got a runner in scoring position after Brandon Yoder singled and proceeded to steal second, but the Pride came up empty handed again. Gettysburg scored the first run of the day after an RBI double in the bottom of the second. The Bullets would add one more giving them a 2-0 lead.
 
  • Both offenses were quiet after the second, until Gettysburg added on to their lead in fifth after a bases loaded walk and a passed ball giving them a 4-0 advantage. The Pride bats continued to try and find some momentum but were unable to find the hit to get them going. Gettysburg would add-on one more in the bottom of the 7th after an RBI single and shut down the Widener bats for the remainder of the game giving them the 5-0 win.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED VS. WILLIAM PEACE
  • After a quiet first inning from both offenses, the Pride struck first. Chris McKenna got things started with a double in the second and Myles Calderbank drove him in with a double of his own. Widener took a 2-0 lead in the third after JP Diguiseppe drove in Braedyn Clinton on an RBI single. The Pride continued to build their lead in the fourth as Brandon Yoder started the inning off with a double followed by a sacrifice fly Tyler Harper to give Widener a 3-0 lead.
 
  • The Pride offense exploded in the fifth, scoring four runs to give them a 7-0 advantage. Ryan Bauerle got the scoring started with a double to drive in Sam Benedetti. After a Diguiseppe walk, Kevin Bukowski stepped to the plate and smashed one over the left field wall driving in three runs. Bobby Doherty extended the lead in the sixth with an RBI single giving the Pride an 8-0 lead. The Pacers got their offense going in the seventh, putting up a four spot to put a little pressure on the Pride. But the Pride pitching staff was able to rebound and deliver a scoreless eight and ninth inning to secure their first win of the season by a final score of 8-4.
UP NEXT
The Pride's the second game against William Peace has been canceled due to inclement weather.

Widener's next game will now be at Kean on Tuesday, February 24th. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
