PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (May 26, 2016) – Widener University seniors
Stephen Fortin (Goffstown, N.H.) and
Thomas Zamorski (Frenchtown, N.J.) have been named to the Capital One District IV Academic All-America Team in men's cross country and men's track & field by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). They both made the all-district first team and are now eligible for Academic All-America laurels.
Fortin, an engineering major, helped Widener win three Middle Atlantic Conference championships this past year in cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field while also earning All-MAC First Team recognition in all three sports. He finished 10th individually at the MAC Cross Country Championships and third in the 3,000-meter run and 5,000-meters at the MAC Indoor Track & Field Championships before concluding the spring with a third-place finish in the 10,000 and a fourth-place performance in the 5,000 at the league's outdoor postseason meet. In addition, Fortin was named the MAC Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year as well as a Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area selection in men's cross country.
Zamorski, who majors in biomedical engineering, has emerged as one of the nation's premier throwers during the indoor and outdoor seasons. He garnered NCAA All-America accolades by placing fifth in the weight throw at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships this past winter and is currently seeded second in the hammer throw for this weekend's NCAA outdoor meet. In addition, Zamorski was the MAC champion in his premier event each season and was named the MAC Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year in both sports.
Following today's announcement, Widener has now had eight student-athletes who have made the Capital One Academic All-District Team in their respective sports during the 2015-16 academic year. The other honorees include
Ryan O'Hara (Royersford, Pa.) and
Blaine Price (Jefferson, Md.) of the football team,
Bob Barnett (Glenolden, Pa.) of the baseball team,
Alie Alkins (Aston, Pa.) and
Alexis Schengrund (Hillsborough, N.J.) of the softball team and
Erin Neugebauer (Eden Prairie, Minn.) of the women's swimming program. In addition, Alkins was named a Capital One Academic All-America First Team selection earlier this week.
