Men's Indoor Track & Field | 2/7/2016 1:18:00 PM

CHESTER, Pa. (Feb. 6, 2016) – Junior Ernie Pitone (Springfield, Pa.) shattered an eleven year-old record as the Widener men's indoor track & field team competed at the Villanova Invitational and the Frank Colden Invitational on Saturday.

At the Villanova Invitational in Staten Island, N.Y., the junior recorded a time of 8:19.72 in the 3,000-meter race. The fourth place finish was fastest enough to be a head of several student-athletes from Division I programs, and quick enough to set the new school record in the event.

The record was previously held by two-time All-American Joe Francisco, who set the mark of 8:27.1 on January 14th, 2005.

In the same event, William McDermott (Lansdowne, Pa.) recorded a time of 8:27.02 at the Villanova Invitational.

Sophomore Josh Tupper (Pottstown, Pa.) recorded a personal best time of 49.75 in the 40-meter dash at the Villanova Invitational.

At the Frank Colden Invitational, senior Ameer Sorrell (Port Norris, N.J.) recorded a tenth place finish in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.20 seconds. Freshman Anthony Jordan (Damascus, Md.) notched a time of 7.65, while Sean Weiss (Spring City, Pa.) recorded a time of 8.00.

In the mile race, senior Leonard Harmon (Charlton, Mass.) was the top finisher in the event. He recorded a time 4:22.79 for the victory, while senior Stephen Fortin (Goffstown, N.H.) recorded a time of 4:31.17 for a sixth place finish.

Senior Andrew Cooper (Freehold, N.J.) earned a second place finish in the 5,000 meter race with a time of 16:07.38.

In the field events, juniors Daniel Herbster (Garnet Valley, Pa.) and Alex Cucciarre (Souderton, Pa.) went two-three in the shot put event. Herbster recorded a best toss of 14.00 meters (45'-11.25"), while Cucciarre notched a personal throw of 13.96 meters (45'-9.75")

Junior Daniel Whalen (Morris Hills, N.J.) earned a fifth place finish with a toss of 13.76 meters (45'-1.75").

The Pride will be back in action on February 14th as they travel to compete at the Cornell Sunday Invitational in Ithaca, N.Y.
