FREDERICK, Md. (Nov. 5, 2015) – The Widener University men's swimming team swept its competition at a quad meet hosted by Hood on Saturday afternoon. The Pride earned a 168-31 victory over FDU-Florham, a 136-68 win over Hood and triumphed by a 146-58 decision against Messiah.
Senior
Ian Gaynor (Donegal, Ireland) and sophomore
Aaron Green (Camden-Wyoming, Del.) paced Widener by winning one individual event and swimming on both victorious relays. Gaynor most notably broke the school record in the 50-yard freestyle by swimming the opening leg of the 200 free relay in a blistering 20.18 seconds, which was also an NCAA "B" cut time for the returning NCAA All-American. Mike Grajek (Freehold, N.J.) and
Jeff Hicks (White Haven, Pa.) as well as Green and Gaynor would finish the race in 1:25.84 to cap another strong afternoon for the Pride.
In addition, Green won the 100 fly in 52.61 and teamed up with Green, Grajek and freshman
Paolo Cortez (Brick Township, N.J.) to record a winning time of 1:39.04 on the 200 medley relay at the beginning of the meet. Cortez also had a strong individual performance by capturing the 100 breast in 1:02.07, and Gaynor won the 50 free by touching the wall in 20.25.
Widener (6-0, MAC 6-0) will next travel to Lancaster, Pa. to swim at the Franklin and Marshall Invitational. The three-day meet will begin on Friday, Nov. 18.
