CHESTER, Pa. (Dec. 12, 2015) – In a meet that came down to the wire, senior
Erin Neugebauer (Eden Prairie, Minn.) won three individual events and swam on a first-place relay for the second straight weekend to lead the Widener University women's swimming team to a 137.5-124.5 victory over Washington College on Saturday evening at the Schwartz Center.
After the Shorewomen took the top two spots in the 100-yard butterfly to pull within five points with two events remaining, Neugebauer captured the 200 IM in 2:16.72 by finishing just 1.23 seconds ahead of the runner-up performer from Washington College to put the Pride in control. Christine Kunzler (Livermore, Calif.), junior
Melaney Heald (Georgetown, Del.), freshman
Lauren Griffith (Doylestown, Pa.) and classmate
Kaylin Augustine (Wyoming, Pa.) then edged out the Shorewomen by less than half a second and touched the wall in 1:42.37 to clinch the dual meet win.
Neugebauer claimed three of Widener's six first-place finishes in individual events by also winning the 100 and 200 breaststroke events in 1:09.35 and 2:30.81, respectively, earlier in the evening. In addition, she started the meet by swimming the breaststroke leg for the first-place 200 medley relay that clocked in at 1:55.03. The group that edged out the Shorewomen by just nine one-hundredths of a second also included Griffith,
Liz O'Sullivan and Kunzler.
Other notable performances were made by Kunzler and Heald. Kunzler won the 50 and 100 free events in 25.64 seconds and 55.46 seconds, respectively, while Heald captured the 200 free in 2:01.09.
Widener (6-3) will break for final exams and resume competition when it travels to Cabrini on Saturday, Jan. 16 for a 1:00 p.m. dual meet.
