Freshman infielder Nicholas Enos (Williamstown, NJ) hit a two-run double in the top of the 10th inning to lead Widener past Penn State Abington, 6-4, on Wednesday night.
Widener (24-11) got off to fast start when freshman Bob Barnett (Glenolden, PA) singled in the first inning and preceded to steal second base on the next at bat. Enos later singled to center field to bring home Barnett for the first run of the game. Barnett had a career day, finishing 4-of-4 with a run, an RBI and two stolen bases.
Senior Sam Christie (Upper Darby, PA) singled through the left side that drove home freshman Greg McDonough (Ambler, PA) from second base. Christie later scored on a single from Barnett to the right side.
The Pride added one more run in the second when senior Michael Riverso (Philadelphia, PA) hit a sacrifice fly that drove home freshman Michael Elfreth (Washington Twp., NJ) from third.
Penn State (11-17-1) scored one run in the fourth and another in the sixth to pull within two runs.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Penn State tied the game when Ted Smallwood and Mike Scaringelli each hit an RBI double to push the non-conference game into extra innings.
In the top of the 10th with two outs, junior Matt Scherer (Havertown, PA) doubled to advance Riverso to third base. Enos then stepped up and crushed a ball into center field that drove home both Riverso and Scherer to take a 6-4 lead. Nicolas Enos went 3-of-5 with three RBI.
Widener pitcher Joseph Richie (Reading, PA) pitched 5 1/3 innings, with four strikeouts and two earned runs. In relief, Riverso recorded the win with the final two outs of the ninth inning to improve to 1-1 on the year and freshman Nick Donovan (Aston, PA) recorded his second save of the season with a perfect 10th inning on the mound.
Widener returns to Commonwealth Conference action on Friday against Messiah at 3:30 in Chester, PA.
