Men's Lacrosse Suffers 7-1 Defeat From Ursinus

(box score)

Senior goalkeeper Mac Nestler (Chatham, NJ) made 16 saves, but the relentless Ursinus offense was too much in a 7-1 defeat of Widener in Collegeville, PA.

Widener (1-2) went down early in the first quarter on Wednesday and could not regain the momentum later in the contest.

Two minutes into the game, Ursinus' Mark Stratton found Steve Smyrl in a man-up situation to take the 1-0 lead.  Only 10 minutes late, Stratton found Jake Weber on the left side for his second assist of the quarter.

Widener's goal was scored by freshman Reed Hofmann (Mount Laurel, NJ) only 40 seconds into the second quarter to make the score 2-1.  After a slashing penalty was called and Widener was awarded a man-up opportunity, Hofmann whipped a shot from the outside to score his first goal of his college career.

Ursinus regained control of the scoreboard minutes later with an unassisted goal from Mike Neal.  Neal, Weber, and Logan Panaccione each netted two goals apiece for the Bears.

Junior midfielder Kyle Blakemore (Ridley Park, PA) led the Pride with four shots in the contest, followed by senior Robert Clemens (Aston, PA) and sophomore Tim Taylor (Philadelphia, PA) with three shots apiece.

Defensively, Widener was led by senior Casey Decker (Ridley, PA) with seven ground balls and two caused turnovers, along with fellow senior Timothy Winslow (Newbury, MA) with six ground balls and two forced turnovers.

Widener will have 10 days off and then return to action at No. 15 Dickinson on Saturday, March 15 at 1:00 pm.
