Softball Swept at No. 14 Lebanon Valley

(Game 1) / (Game 2)

Widener rallied in the seventh inning of game two in a tough 8-7, eight-inning loss to 14th-ranked Lebanon Valley before it was dealt a 13-2 setback in the nightcap in Annville, PA.

Freshman Alexis Schengrund (Hillsborough, NJ) has been a force during the young season in the circle, but in game one came through with her bat.  Her two-run single to left scored freshman Bree Vanreenen (Elkton, MD) and junior Carissa Harris (Douglassville, PA) in the top of the second inning for a 2-0 Widener lead.

The Dutchmen took a 3-2 lead in the last of the fourth when Emily Johnson cracked a three-run homer.  The margin grew to 4-2 in the fifth as Sam Ginder lined an RBI double to left, scoring Sam Derr.

But Widener fought back to tie things, 4-4, in the seventh.  Schengrund and freshman Ally Horvath (Chalfont, PA) each singled and moved up a base on a wild pitch.  Schengrund scored on a groundout from sophomore Heather Forward (Philadelphia, PA) and freshman Angela Hood (Mullica Twp., NJ) followed with a run-scoring single to plate Horvath.

But LVC won it in the last of the eighth.  Sammy Bost lined a one-out single up the middle, stole second and scored on Derr's single to left.

Schengrund was charged with five runs – two earned – and six hits over 6 1/3 innings.  She, Hood, Harris and Vanreenen each amassed two hits.

Derr tossed eight innings, allowing four runs and 11 hits with three strikeouts.  Bost ended with two hits.

The Dutchmen in game two plated nine runs in the bottom of the fourth inning for the final, keyed by Haley Neff drilling a three-run homer.

Vanreenen and sophomore Alie Alkins (Aston, PA) each had a hit in game two.  Souderton, PA freshman Salina Allebach (0-1) allowed three runs and four hits over 2/3 innings for the Pride.

Bost had three hits and two RBI in the finale with Neff getting four RBI.  Neff also got the win, yielding two runs and two hits over five innings with five strikeouts.
