Men's Lacrosse Falls, 6-5, at Dickinson

(box score)

A battle of two teams ranked at the start of the season turned out to be a close game throughout with Widener's late rally just falling short in a 6-5 loss at Dickinson in Carlisle, PA.

The Red Devils forged a 5-2 lead at three-quarter time thanks to Brian Cannon getting a goal and two assists in that span.  They owned a 29-26 shots edge over that time and goalkeeper Nick Baxter made five saves in the third quarter.

But Widener fought back, closing to 5-3 just two minutes into the fourth quarter when freshman Tyler Schulte (Southampton, NJ) scored off a feed from senior Robert Clemens (Aston, PA).  Tyler White restored the three-goal margin for Dickinson with 10:52 left on an unassisted marker.

The deficit closed to 6-4 with 10:15 remaining as freshman Vince Marra (Morton, PA) found the back of the net off a pass from sophomore Kyle Gratz (Worthington, OH).  Freshman Chris Sanchez (Flanders, NJ) then scored with 7:42 to play off Clemens' feed for a 6-5 contest.

But Dickinson's defense buckled down at that point, limiting Widener to just one shot after that.  This came with 39 seconds remaining when sophomore Tim Taylor (Philadelphia, PA) had his attempt for the tie stoned by Baxter.

Gratz had a goal and an assist, Clemens dished three assists and senior All-America Mac Nestler (Chatham, NJ) had 13 saves, just three off his season high, for Widener (1-3).

White scored two goals, Cannon and Brian Gleason had a goal and an assist, Carter Moore won 10-of-14 face-offs to go with eight ground balls and Baxter closed with 12 saves for Dickinson (3-3).

The Red Devils entered the season seventh in the country and the Pride were 19th.

Widener is home Wednesday against Immaculata, starting at 4:00 pm.
