Men's Lacrosse Rolls to 8-3 Triumph Over Swarthmore

Sophomore Kyle Gratz (Worthington, OH) scored three goals for Widener, including the last in his team's five-goal run that helped the squad to an 8-3 victory over Swarthmore at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.
 
Gratz scored two straight goals bridging the first and second quarters, giving Widener a 2-1 lead early in the second.  After Brendan Conway netted his second of the contest for the Garnet with 9:40 remaining, the Pride took off for their first victory of the season.
 
Freshman Wade Dickey (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) opened the burst with 6:13 to play in the half off a feed from freshman Nick Striebich (Ellicott City, MD) for a 3-2 Widener lead.  Senior Robert Clemens (Aston, PA/Sun Valley) ended the scoring in the half with an unassisted marker for a two-goal lead.
 
Widener controlled play throughout and that continued into the third quarter.  Sophomore Mike McIlwee (Hicksville, NY) picked up a loose ball and scored early in the period for a 5-2 margin.  Sophomore Tim Taylor (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) then tallied off Clemens' feed with 11 seconds remaining for a four-goal cushion.
 
Gratz completed his hat trick early in the fourth for the Pride, who posted a 32-17 shots edge and forced the Garnet into a stunning 27 turnovers.
 
Sophomore Marc LaVine (Nashua, NH) also scored, Clemens dished two assists and sophomore Richard Carrier (Naperville, IL) won 6-of-10 face-offs for the Pride (1-1).  Senior All-America Mac Nestler (Chatham, NJ) amassed six saves.
 
Jonathan Molloy also scored, Ian Lukaszewicz had two assists, Mike Selverian won 5-of-10 face-offs and Jonathan Cohen totaled 13 saves for the Garnet (0-2).
 
Widener on Wednesday visits Ursinus for a 4:00 pm start in Collegeville, PA.
