No. 19 Men's Lacrosse Battles to the End in 11-3 Loss to No. 4 Salisbury

(box score)

No. 19 Widener played a strong game against fourth-ranked Salisbury, but was dealt an 11-3 season-opening loss at Leslie C. Quick Stadium.

The Pride more than held their own in the first quarter, only trailing 3-2.  After Luke Phipps, Mike Kane and Sean Fitzgerald scored in the first five minutes for Salisbury, junior Kyle Blakemore (Ridley Park, PA) and senior Robert Clemens (Aston, PA) tallied in the last five minutes for Widener.

But the Sea Gulls put up four in the second quarter to take a 7-2 lead into the locker room.  Kane and Donovan Lange scored in the first three minutes before Lange netted another with 3:34 left.  This was before Brandon Kendrick scored a beautiful, behind-the-head, timer-on goal with 18 seconds to play for the five goal lead.

Widener was playing its first game since losing two forwards/midfielders to graduation who were picked All-Commonwealth Conference along with many others up front who were vital to the squad making last year's league final.  Even without them, the Pride still held a 15-13 edge in shots in the second half.

Clemens had a goal and an assist with sophomore Marc LaVine (Nashua, NH) also scoring for the Pride.  Senior Timothy Winslow (Newbury, MA) had five ground balls and four caused turnovers with junior Trevor Alspach (Willingboro, NJ) going 7-for-12 on face-offs.

Senior All-America goalkeeper Mac Nestler (Chatham, NJ) made 11 saves for Widener (0-1).

Kane had three goals and an assist, Fitzgerald and Lange each scored twice, Alex Taylor made 12 saves in just under 59 minutes and Chris Biank went 8-for-15 on face-offs for the Sea Gulls (3-0).

Widener is home next Saturday against Swarthmore, beginning at 1:00 pm as part of the "320 Challenge."
