Women's Soccer Wins School-Record Ninth in a Row, 3-2 Over DeSales in Overtime

(box score)

Senior Kelly Buckley (Villanova, PA) scored exactly five minutes into overtime to help Widener rally for a 3-2 victory at DeSales in Center Valley, PA for its school-record ninth straight win.

The Pride also ran their unbeaten streak to 10 games, which ties with the school record accomplished in 1995 and 2010.

Senior goaltender Valarie Perretti (Clayton, NJ) made six saves, including five in the second half to pull out yet another win for the Pride (9-0-1).

The first half ended scoreless with only two shots being taken on goal, one for the Pride and one for the Bulldogs.

It was 12 minutes into the second half when the scoring began with an unassisted goal from Widener sophomore Brae McQuade (Princeton Junction, NJ). McQuade came off the bench and took a shot from the top of the box that soared over the outreached hands of DeSales goalie Michelle Churchman.

In the 63rd minute, the Bulldogs (4-3-2) answered back as Brady Walsh crossed the ball from the left side to find Ashley Koren who shot the ball off the post and in.

Walsh got her chance to score in the 75th minute on a volley off of a free kick taken by Alyssa Borgesi. Walsh headed the ball past Perretti to give the Bulldogs the lead with 15 minutes left in regulation.

It seemed as Widener would suffer its first loss of the season, but that changed with five minutes remaining in regulation. Senior forward Karen Thomas (Mullica Hill, NJ) managed a long cross into the box where junior Jenna Pedrick (Sicklerville, NJ) was there to rip a shot into the right side netting for her fourth goal of the year.

In the 95th minute, senior Amanda Doran (Philadelphia, PA) hit a through ball that found Buckley in the DeSales box. Buckley drove the ball into the left corner to keep the undefeated streak alive for her fourth of the season.

"I am very proud of the entire team on the way they competed the entire 95 minutes," Widener coach Brian Sheehan said. "There was no panic once we went down in the second half and this is a testament to our senior leadership."

Widener will next travel to Franklin & Marshall on Tuesday at 7:00 pm.
