Early Goal Proves Crucial in Pride Victory Over Alvernia

READING, Pa. – Widener Women's Soccer puts on a defensive clinic in a road victory against the Alvernia Golden Wolves.

The Pride are now 7-7-3 on the season and 1-4 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Widener wasted little time taking control. In the 9th minute, Allison Gomez converted a pass from Charlotte Burke, finishing from close range to give the Pride an early 1–0 advantage. Goalkeeper Araba Abanyie made a key save midway through the half to keep the shutout intact. The Pride defense held firm the rest of the way, allowing just three total Alvernia shots in the first 45 minutes.
 
  • Widener continued to put on the offensive pressure, outshooting the Wolves 7–2 in the final period. Reilly Klein forced a save from the Alvernia goalkeeper early in the half, and Abby Picollo later had a shot turned away in the 81st minute. Araba Abanyie made her second save of the match on a late Alvernia chance in the 76th minute to secure the shutout. The Pride managed six corner kicks in the second half, keeping consistent pressure on the Alvernia defense while closing out the 1–0 road victory.

The Pride will travel to St. Davids Pa. to take on the Eastern Eagles on Saturday, November 1st. Kick off is set for 11 a.m.
