Women's Soccer Keeps Winning Streak Alive by Defeating Wesley 1-0 on Late Goal

(box score)

Senior forward Karen Thomas (Mullica Hill, NJ) scored on a penalty kick with 1:17 remaining, lifting Widener to a 1-0 victory at Wesley in Dover, DE for its eighth straight win.

Widener (8-0-1) is off to the best start in school history and the winning streak equals the team mark set in 1995. The nine-game unbeaten streak is one shy of the school record, accomplished in 1995 and 2010.

The Pride took 26 shots compared to the Wolverines' seven and managed six corner kicks to Wesley's one.

Thomas and junior Jenna Pedrick (SIcklerville, NJ) each took six shots in the contest. Julia Flower (Burlington, CT) recorded four shots and fellow senior Kelly Buckley (Villanova, PA) registered a team leading three shots.

Widener held control of the ball but the match remained scorless going into the final minute of play. When it appeared that the game would need overtime to decide a winner, Widener got one more chance to capitalize on an scoring opportunity. Junior Jenna Pedrick (Sicklerville, NJ) took a corner kick that was cleared to the top of the box where sophomore Brae McQuade (Princeton Junction, NJ) fired a shot that went off the hand of a Wesley defender for a penalty kick.

Widener coach Brian Sheehan elected Thomas, who scored on a penalty kick against Rutgers-Newark two weeks ago, to take the final shot. Thomas accpeted the challange once again, put her foot to the ball and fired it past opposing goalie Morgan Warrington to secure the win. Thomas leads the team and the Commonwealth Conference with eight goals.

Senior goalkeeper Valarie Perretti (Clayton, NJ) managed five saves for her seventh shutout of the season.

Widener next travels to DeSales on Saturday at 12:30 pm.
