Women's Soccer Posts Another Shutout, 3-0 Over Rutgers-Camden

(box score)

Widener continued on cruise control by getting three second-half goals and notching its fourth straight shutout, 3-0 over Rutgers-Camden at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.

The Pride (4-0-1) owned a 14-3 shots edge in the second half and got the only goal they would need in the 56th minute. Junior Jenna Pedrick (Sicklerville, NJ) lofted a ball toward the net that goalkeeper Lauren West had in her hands and dropped. Senior Karen Thomas (Mullica Hill, NJ), who has a goal in each of her last four games, was there to punch it home for her team-leading fifth goal of the year.

Widener doubled its lead in the 74th minute with yet another senior cracking the board. Kelly Buckley (Villanova, PA) got a pass from Thomas and had her shot go off the left post, carom off the right post and go in for her second marker of the season.

That looked like it would be the final tally, but Pedrick added one for good measure in the 90th minute. Freshman Erica McDonough (Glendora, NJ) dropped a pass for Buckley, whose cross went over to the left where Pedrick was there for her fourth career goal.

Senior Valarie Perretti (Clayton, NJ), the reigning Commonwealth Conference Goalkeeper of the Week, made three saves and Buckley amassed nine shots for the Pride.

"I thought that our defense worked extremely well as a unit tonight," Widener coach Brian Sheehan said. "Our communication between Val and all four defenders has been getting better with each contest. As long as we keep that up, we have a chance to continue being successful."

West finished with seven saves and Catherine Fiore took two shots for the Scarlet Raptors (2-3).

Widener continues its best start since opening 7-0-1 in 2009 and its shutout streak is the longest since it also had four in a row in 2010. The Pride today learned they are ranked 10th in the first National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Mid-Atlantic Region Poll.

Widener continues its four-game homestand Saturday vs. Rutgers-Newark, starting at 5:00 pm.
