Softball Drops Two at Haverford

(Game 1) / (Game 2)

Widener played tough at Haverford in both contests, but were handed a pair of setbacks by scores of 11-3 and 6-3.

Widener in game one took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning on a run-scoring groundout from senior Jen Nance (Lansdowne, PA) and an RBI single down the left-field line from freshman Alie Alkins (Aston, PA).

But the Fords plated four runs in the bottom of the frame for a 5-2 cushion.  Jen DiCandilo lined a two-run single up the middle, Lauren Touey drew a bases-loaded walk and Stephanie Wolfson had an RBI fielder's choice that plated Dayle Comerford.

Leading 8-3 entering the fifth inning, Haverford scored three more to win via run rule.  Elizabeth Newman lined an RBI double to left center and DiCandilo cracked a two-run homer to end it.

Junior Jackie Korang (Delran, NJ) batted 3-for-3 with Alkins and freshman Heather Forward (Philadelphia, PA) each getting two hits apiece for the Pride (10-16).  Philadelphia junior Liz Carpino (2-5) was charged with five runs and five hits over 2 1/3 innings.

DiCandilo went 3-for-3 with five RBI, and both Newman and Comerford had two hits.  Sara Tauriello (7-1) struck out five, allowing two runs and six hits over three innings for the Fords (17-9).

Widener in game two opened a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.  Alkins lined an RBI single to right and senior Christine Mattis (Drexel Hill, PA) added a run-scoring groundout.

But the Fords got four in the bottom half for a 4-2 lead as Touey got an infield single and Wolfson was credited with three RBI on a single to right center.

Comerford had an RBI double in the second and Newman followed suit in the third for a 6-2 margin.  Forward lined a run-scoring single in the top of the fourth for a 6-3 contest.

Widener in the seventh brought the tying run to the plate with one out after freshman Emily Corson (Millville, NJ) and Alkins both singled.  But Korang struck out swinging and senior Kristina Kenney (Philadelphia, PA) flied out to right to end it.

Alkins rapped three hits to extend her hitting streak to seven games and Nance added two.  Mattis (3-6) allowed six runs and nine hits over five innings.

Wolfson batted 3-for-3 with three RBI.  Claire Fitzgerald (4-2) yielded three runs – two earned – and seven hits over five innings for the Fords.

Widener is home Saturday against Albright for a doubleheader that begins at 1:00 pm.
