Softball Sweeps a Pair at Lycoming

(Game 1) / (Game 2)

Widener used a great combination of hitting and pitching to gain a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader sweep, 4-0 and 3-2, at Lycoming in Williamsport, PA.

The Pride in game one scored twice in the second inning for a 2-0 lead.  Senior Casey Hargadon (Wallingford, PA) reached on catcher's interference, was sacrificed to second by fellow senior Christine Mattis (Drexel Hill, PA) and sophomore Carissa Harris (Douglassville, PA) singled.  Freshman Taylor Church (Glen Mills, PA) then came through with a clutch two-out double to plate Harris and Hargadon.

The margin grew to 4-0 in the fifth when junior Jackie Korang (Delran, NJ) lined an RBI single to center and Hargadon followed with a sacrifice fly.

It was more than enough for Philadelphia junior Liz Carpino (2-4), who gave up only six hits over seven innings and faced just five batters above the minimum.  Senior Jen Nance (Lansdowne, PA) closed with two hits.

Holly Lansberry (4-3) allowed four runs – two earned – and six hits over seven innings for Lycoming.  Ashley Witmer rapped two hits.

Widener (10-14, 4-8 CC) in game two scored twice in the top of the sixth inning for a 3-2 lead.  Hargadon led off with a single, was erased on a fielder's choice that placed Harris at first and both senior Kristina Kenney (Philadelphia, PA) and freshman Jamie Williams (South River, NJ) walked to load the bases.  Freshman Heather Forward (Philadelphia, PA) then continued her solid year with a two-out single to center that scored Kenney and Harris for the lead.

Korang (3-5) allowed just two hits over 3 1/3 innings for the victory.  Carpino pitched a perfect seventh for her first save of the season and second career.  Forward, Korang and Hargadon all had two hits.

"A good day of Widener style softball," head coach Fred Dohrmann said.  "Excellent pitching, timely hitting and good base running.  Everyone was at the top of their game."

Caroline Lapano (4-6) was charged with three runs and 10 hits over seven innings for the Warriors (10-10, 1-7).

Widener opened the scoring in the first on an RBI double from freshman Alie Alkins (Aston, PA) for a 1-0 lead.  Lycoming got a run-scoring single from Allyson Marianelli in the second and an RBI single from Lapano in the third for a 2-1 cushion.

Widener is on the road Tuesday at Haverford, starting at 3:00 pm.
