Johnny Casey Once Again A Force in Men's Lacrosse's 12-4 Rout at Elizabethtown

(box score)

Senior Johnny Casey (Glenside, PA) stayed on a roll with six goals and Widener for the second straight game took control in the second half en route to a 12-4 Commonwealth Conference road thumping of Elizabethtown.

Wednesday's victory over Lebanon Valley saw Widener own a 6-1 scoring edge in the second half.  The Pride today matched that in notching their fourth straight victory during a contest which they posted a 37-35 shots edge, including 23-16 spanning the second and third quarters.

Owning a 6-4 lead midway through the third quarter, Widener (7-3, 3-0 CC) turned to the reliable Casey for a boost and he delivered.  Casey started his run with 7:02 left in the period with a goal to make it 7-4 and then assisted on a tally from Josh Fox (Wynnewood, PA) with 4:09 to go for a four-goal margin.

Casey then added another with 45 seconds remaining in the quarter and freshman Marc LaVine (Nashua, NH) scored with eight seconds left for a 10-4 contest.

At this point it was almost academic, but Casey made sure with two more goals in the fourth off assists from freshman Tim Taylor (Philadelphia, PA) for the final and the Pride's fifth consecutive victory over the Blue Jays.

Casey, who also had six goals on two other occasions including March 13 at Immaculata, already has an amazing 28 goals and 40 points over 10 games this year.  He stands sixth in school history with 132 career goals and moved into eighth place with 187 career points.

"Once again, we came up with a great defensive effort and limited their opportunities after they scored a couple nice goals early," head coach Brendan Dawson said.  "As he's done all year for us, Casey came up with some timely goals and finished the opportunities that his teammates created for him.  Good senior leadership."

LaVine and Fox each scored twice, Taylor finished with two assists, freshman Nick Rodgers (Aurora, IL) won 17-of-20 face-offs and junior Mac Nestler (Chatham, NJ) amassed 12 saves for the Pride, who have permitted fewer than five goals four times this season.

Craig Hunsberger had a goal and an assist with Chris Wenger making 15 saves for the Blue Jays (7-3, 2-2).

Widener is home Wednesday against Alvernia at 7:00 pm.
