Widener University will participate in the Middle Atlantic Conference's fourth “MAC ATtaCk on Hunger."
In an initiative begun in 2010 by our athletic trainers, Widener is inviting all Certified Athletics Trainers (ATC) from the 18 MAC schools to help collect food and money for their local food banks. The schools are asked to hold such day(s) at some point during the spring.
All fans in attendance at the selected games are asked to bring food that will help the needy. Any items will be accepted, but the ones in most need are canned proteins, canned beans, dry beans, coffee, sugar, cold cereals and hot cereals such as oatmeal.
Widener is continuing the event this Saturday when women's lacrosse, softball and baseball take part. The first day was last Saturday, involving the men's lacrosse and track & field teams.
It is part of Widener's mission to be civically engaged to the vitality and well being of the communities in which we serve. In a Philadelphia Inquirer article, it states Philadelphia has more people in what is called deep poverty than any other city among the nation's 10 largest. It also states 24 percent of the Chester residents are food insecure. According to the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, the First United States Congressional District is the hungriest in the commonwealth and second hungriest area in the country.
