No. 16 Men’s Lacrosse Loses In Overtime In Tough Game Against Albright, 10-9

(boxscore)
No. 16 Widener visited Albright in a rematch of last year's Commonwealth Conference final, but left Reading, PA with a tough 10-9 loss in overtime.

Widener was first to score in the opening quarter, with Ryan McDonald (Yardley, PA) getting an unassisted goal with just under 10 minutes remaining. About one minute later, Andy Poitras scored his first of two goals tonight to tie the game, and teammate TJ Holston netted a goal to break the tie with 7:30 remaining. Phil Potter scored a goal with one minute left, with the assist going to Holston, to send the game into the second period holding a two-goal lead over the Pride.

Widener had a spark coming into the second period and scored three goals within a stretch of one minute. Junior Robert Clemens (Aston, PA) fed the ball to senior Johnny Casey (Glenside, PA) for the first of the period with one minute expired.  Freshman Tim Taylor (Philadelphia, PA) found the back of the net at 13:30 to tie the game and senior Josh Fox (Wynnewood, PA) gave the Pride the lead about thirty seconds later, with Casey and Clemens being credited for the assists, respectively. In the last four minutes of the period Albright netted three more goals, with Potter scoring one with four seconds on the clock to give Albright a 6-5 edge.

Albright scored again with 13:50 remaining in the third period, but Widener turned around and scored two goals, credited to Fox and freshman Marc LaVine (Nashua, NH), to send the game into the final period of regulation tied 7-7.

The Lions got ahead by two in the fourth period with goals two minutes apart with half of the period remaining. Clemens got another assist when he found Andrew Buckley (Lumberton, NJ) for a man-up goal with seven minutes remaining. La Vine put one past goalkeeper Jordan DiZenzo about one minute later to tie the game 9-9 and ultimately send it into overtime.

In the sudden-death period, Widener won the initial faceoff and Casey took a shot right away that was knocked aside by DiZenzo. Just 1:14 into the stanza, Albright's Mike Southwick fed Ryan Turner for his 36th goal of the season and the win.

Despite the loss, Widener still clinched a spot in the Commonwealth Conference Tournament. The Pride (9-4, 5-1 CC) are in second place, one-half game ahead of the Lions (10-2, 4-1).

The Pride will host fourth-ranked Stevenson on Saturday in another Commonwealth Conference game, beginning at 7:00 pm.
