Softball Sweeps Cabrini

(Game 1) / (Game 2)

Widener traveled to Radnor, PA to take on Cabrini and came home with two wins, winning the first 6-0 thanks to a six-run sixth inning before taking the second, 12-3.

The beginning of game one was quiet offensively for both teams, with only six hits spread between the two teams in the first five innings. In the top of the sixth inning, freshman center fielder Alie Alkins (Aston, PA) led off the inning by being awarded first after being hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt laid down by pitcher Jackie Korang (Delran, NJ). With two outs and the threat of leaving Alkins stranded in scoring position, Widener's bats came alive with seven consecutive hits, including a double from each seniors Casey Hargadon (Wallingford, PA) and Kristina Kenney (Philadelphia, PA).

Korang (4-5) received the win after pitching six innings and only giving up four hits in 21 batters faced. Marcelle Crist pitched seven innings for Cabrini and gave up 11 hits for six earned runs in 34 batters faced.

Cabrini (10-16) got a head start in the second game, scoring one run in the first inning with a leadoff double by Lindsey Atzert and two singles after keeping Widener from scoring in the top half of the inning.

Hargadon led off the second inning with a walk and made it to third on a throwing error by the pitcher, in which Kenney made it to second on. With Hargadon moving on the pitch, senior Colleen Orsborn (Drexel hill, PA) laid down a squeeze bunt to score her to tie the game. Now with Kenney sitting on third, freshman catcher Taylor Church (Glen Mills, PA) bunted to give the Pride another run. senior Jen Nance (Landsdowne, PA) scored the third run of the inning with a single to bring in freshman Heather Forward (Philadelphia, PA), who reached on a fielder's choice and stole second base.

Widener (14-16) added two more runs to its total in the third inning on three consecutive this from Kenney, Orsborn and Church.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, the first two batters for Cabrini drew walks, which allowed them to score on singles hit by Katie Hall and Steph Diegel to shrink the margin to 5-3. Widener's offense stepped up again, scoring one run on three hits in the sixth inning and six runs on six hits in the top of the seventh inning to put the score out of reach of Cabrini.

Liz Carpino (Philadelphia, PA) is credited with the win after pitching four innings and only allowing one run on four hits and striking out two. Missy Miller pitched seven inning for Cabrini, giving up 12 runs -- 10 earned -- on 14 hits in 44 batters faced.

Alkins had three hits in the doubleheader to extend her team-season-high hitting streak to 11 games and Forward had a hit in each contest to bump her run to seven games.

Widener will host Immaculata on Wednesday for a doubleheader as a part of the team's annual “Strike Out Cancer Night”, with the first game beginning at 5:00 pm. The proceeds from the game will benefit Jackson Mitchum, Widener Softball's adopted teammate, as well as the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).
