Hot Bats Lead To Softball’s Sweep Over Albright

(Game 1) / (Game 2)
Widener's offense stepped up in a big way to sweep Albright in today's Commonwealth Conference home doubleheader, winning the first game 13-3 followed by a 12-3 victory, with both in five innings.

In game one Widener saw itself down by two after the first half of the first inning, but tied the game in its first inning at the plate. Albright scored its two runs on two hits and an error before second baseman Colleen Orsborn (Drexel Hill, PA) and shortstop Casey Hargadon (Wallingford, PA) teamed up to turn a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning. In the bottom half of the inning freshman right fielder Heather Forward (Philadelphia, PA) led off with a single to shallow center and freshman Alie Alkins (Aston, PA) blasted a home run to left center to tie the game.

In the second inning the Lady Lions (5-23, 2-12 CC) scored their final run of the game when right fielder Emily O'Donnell hit her first collegiate home run over the center-field fence.

Widener scored one more run in the second inning to tie it once again and then scored an additional two runs in the third inning to take the lead. Alkins hit another home run in her second at-bat down the left-field line and junior Jackie Korang (Delran, NJ) scored on a single by senior Christine Mattis (Drexel Hill, PA) after reaching on a double.

The Pride (12-16, 6-8) opened the game up in the fourth inning, scoring eight runs -- two earned -- on six hits after sending 13 people to the plate.

Starting pitcher Liz Carpino (Philadelphia, PA) received the win after pitching four of the five innings and giving up just three runs—two earned—on three hits in 18 batters faced. Jamie Williams (South River, NJ) pitched the last inning, striking out two and forcing a pop-up to Hargadon.

In game two Widener had two big scoring innings, scoring four in the second inning and eight in the third, while only allowing Albright to score three innings in the top of the third inning.

With one out down in the second inning, Carissa Harris (Douglassville, PA) hit a single through the right side and advanced to second when Hargadon reached due to catcher's interference. Orsborn hit a single through the right side to score Harris, and Hargadon scored on a groundout by catcher Taylor Church (Glen Mills, PA). Forward then connected for a left-center double to score Orsborn and crossed the plate herself on a shallow single to center by senior Jen Nance (Lansdowne, PA) before the inning ended.

In the top of the third Albright's Brandy Lagomarsino reached first with a bunt for a single and advanced to second when Shelby Snyder drew a walk. With two outs down and two runners on base, first baseman Natalie Carlucci hit a homerun over the left field fence before a groundout ended the inning.

In the bottom half of the inning the Pride strung together eight hits for eight runs. Korang led off with a right-side single and scored on another right-side single, this time hit by Harris, after being advanced to second by a sacrifice bunt. Hargadon hit her first home run of the season for her 100th career hit to score Harris. Orsborn and Church both found their way on base and were brought in by Forward's first collegiate home run. Nance drew a base on balls and Alkins hit her third homerun of the day to score the seventh and eighth runs of the inning.

Mattis (4-6) got the win after pitching four innings, giving up three earned runs on three hits and striking out three in 17 batters faced. Korang pitched the last inning and allowed one single before throwing a fielder's choice out, a groundout and a strike out to end the game in five innings.

The loss for game one goes to Allie Frank, who pitched three innings of relief and gave up ten runs—four earned—on nine hits. Game two's loss goes to O'Donnell, who pitched 1.2 innings of relief and gave up two earned runs on five hits in ten batters faced.

Between the two games, Forward hit 4-for-6 with five RBI and scored four times. Alkins went 3-for-7 with three homeruns and also had five RBI. Left fielder Nance and Orsborn each went 3-for-5 at the plate, with Nance getting one RBI and scoring twice and Orsborn scoring three times and totaling three RBI. Korang ended 4-for-6 on the day with two of each runs scored and RBI.
