Softball Splits Doubleheader Against Arcadia

(Game 1) / (Game 2)
Widener hosted Arcadia today in its Commonwealth Conference opener and dropped the first game, 5-1, before coming back to win the second, 3-1.

The first three innings of the opening game were scoreless, with each team totaling two hits. Arcadia made its way onto the scoreboard with an unearned run in the top of the fourth inning after catcher Leanda Helms started things with a single through the right side of the infield followed by a fielding error to put runners on first and second. Widener made two quick groundouts that should have been the end of the inning, but third baseman Corrin Showalter made the most of her at-bat and hit a single to left field that scored Helms before the third out was made a batter later.

Helms led off again in the sixth inning and hit her first homerun of the season to right-center, followed by a homerun to left-center hit by pitcher Jessica Wood, also her first of the season. Widener was able to get out of the inning with no more runs scored with senior shortstop Casey Hargadon (Wallingford, PA) snagging a line drive for the third out.

In the bottom of the sixth Widener had runners on, but was unable to bring them across for a run. In the top of the seventh, Arcadia tacked on two more runs on three hits and a walk.

In its last chance to score Widener was able to put one run across. Freshman center fielder Alie Alkins (Aston, PA) led the inning off with a double to the left-center fence and advanced to second on a groundout. With two outs. senior Jess Way (Marlton, NJ) hit a line drive single to centerfield to score Alkins easily but it was too little too late and the game ended with a score of 5-1.

Liz Carpino (Philadelphia, PA) was saddled with the loss after throwing five innings and giving up two earned runs and six hits. Wood received the win for Arcadia, giving up just one earned run on six hits in seven innings pitched.

Widener won the second game 3-1 to secure the split.

The Pride was first to cross the plate in the bottom of the third inning, with a tight defense getting out of scoring situations and keeping the Knights scoreless. With one out away, senior Jen Nance (Lansdowne, PA) hit a single to shallow center field and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Sophomore Carissa Harris (Douglassville, PA) hit a single through the infield that moved Nance to third and, with two outs, Hargadon hit a right-side single to easily score Nance.

Widener kept the bats going to score two more runs in the fourth inning, sparked by an infield single hit by senior catcher Shelby Mackintosh (Lumberton, NJ). Alkins hit a double down the left-field line that allowed freshman pinch runner Emily Corson (Millville, NJ) to reach third. An infield single to the shortstop score a sliding Corson and moved Alkins to third, which allowed her to score on a sacrifice fly hit by senior pitcher Christine Mattis (Drexel Hill, PA).

The score remained unchanged through the fifth and sixth inning. Arcadia's Alexandra Schafer led the top of the seventh off with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Mattis through two flyouts to keep the runner on second, but Wood hit a double to deep left field that easily scored Schafer to put the Knights on the board. With a pinch runner standing on second in scoring position, catcher Mackintosh threw a dart to senior second baseman Colleen Orsborn (Drexel Hill, PA) for a pick-off play to end the inning and the game.

Mattis takes the win after throwing the full seven innings, striking out three, walking five and giving up just one run on seven this. Sarah Gunia receives the loss for the Knights after giving up three earned runs on seven hits over four innings.

Between the two games Hargadon hit 4-for-6 with one RBI, Alkins went 2-for-5 at the plate and scored twice, and Nance went 2-for-4 and scored once.
