Men's Lacrosse Dispenses Messiah, 10-1, in League Opener

(box score)

Freshman Tim Taylor (Philadelphia, PA) scored all three of his goals in the first half, when Widener put up eight in a 10-1 Commonwealth Conference triumph at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.

Widener (4-3, 1-0 CC) raced to a 4-0 lead at quarter time, scoring all of its goals in the last 8 1/2 minutes.  Junior Robert Clemens (Aston, PA) and senior Brian Einstein (Mount Laurel, NJ) scored to give the Pride a 2-0 cushion before Taylor netted the final two goals of the period.

Ryan Eidenshink (Elkins Park, PA) tallied in the first minute of the second quarter and fellow senior Johnny Casey (Glenside, PA) scored just over four minutes later for a 6-0 margin.  Senior Josh Fox (Wynnewood, PA) found the back of the net with 7:23 left and Taylor completed his third hat trick of the season just over a minute later for an 8-0 halftime margin.

It completed a half in which the Pride owned a 29-6 shots edge and an 18-5 advantage in shots on goal.  Freshman Nick Rodgers (Aurora, IL) won 7-of-10 face-offs in the half.

Casey got his second goal of the game midway through the third quarter and freshman Mark La Vine (Nashua, NH) added one for the Pride, who finished with a 51-16 shots advantage.

Casey had three assists, Clemens notched two, Rodgers won 9-of-15 face-offs and junior Mac Nestler (Chatham, NJ) made eight saves for Widener, which has won four straight against Messiah.

“It's good to get conference play started off on the right foot and with a great defensive effort," Widener head coach Brendan Dawson said.  "I'm proud of the way we started the game and we're looking forward to going to Gettysburg on Wednesday.”

Chris Bry scored with Brooks Arnold and Jon Weimer each making 10 saves over 30 minutes apiece for the Falcons (2-4, 0-1).

It was the Pride's most convincing league win since a 17-7 triumph over Lycoming in last year's conference semifinals.

Widener returns to action Wednesday at 12th-ranked Gettysburg, starting at 3:30 pm.
