Men’s Lacrosse Victorious Over Swarthmore, 11-8

(boxscore)

With the score tied after three periods, a fourth period scoring surge allowed Widener to win 11-8 over Swarthmore today at Clothier Field.

Widener saw itself down 3-1 after the first period of play, with senior Johnny Casey (Glenside, PA) putting the Pride on the board with an unassisted goal at the seven minute-mark. Swarthmore scored two goals in the first five minutes of the next period to stretch its lead to 5-1, but Widener fired back in the last eight minutes of the second with three goals to bring itself within one goal of a tied game. At 7:46, Josh Fox (Wynnewood, PA) fed Ryan Eidenshink (Elkins Park, PA) for a man-up goal and Casey netted two goals in the last four minutes of the period, with assists going to Andrew Buckley (Lumberton, NJ) and Marc La Vine (Nashua, NH).

Coming back into the third period the defense for both teams played big, as only three goals were allowed between the teams. Swarthmore was first to score, at 9:17, with Andrew Preiser finding his way past Pride goalkeeper Mac Nestler (Chatham, NJ). Looking as if that would be the only goal of the period, Widener's La Vine and Eidenshink each fired an unassisted goal past Garnet keeper Jonathan Cohen in the last minute of the period to bring the game to a 6-6 tie.

Less than 15 seconds into the fourth quarter, freshman Tim Taylor (Philadelphia, PA) put one past Cohen to break the tie, with the assist going to Casey. Swarthmore tied it up again about one minute later with a man-up goal, but Eidenshink blasted two goals before the clock reach the 12 minute-mark, Fox receiving the assist on the first. The Garnet scored its final goal at 11:36 to bring the game within one, but Widener followed up with a man-up goal and an even strength goal by the eight minute-mark to make the final 11-8 in favor of the Pride.

Casey and Eidenshink had four goals apiece, both shooting .500 with an assist. Fox picked up four ground balls and served up two assists. Nestler made four saves on the 12 shots faced.

Widener is home on Wednesday, when it hosts Ursinus beginning at 4:00 pm.
