Baseball Begins Campaign With Two Setbacks at St. Mary's (MD)

(Game 1) / (Game 2)

Widener opened its season with a tough 7-6 loss to St. Mary's (MD) before it was handed a 4-1 setback in the nightcap in St. Mary's City, MD.

Widener in game one wasted little time cracking the scoreboard, getting a two-run homer from senior Dennis Hocker (Coral Spring, FL) in the top of the first inning for his 13th career long ball.  The lead grew to 3-0 in the second when sophomore Marc Noyalis (Dallas, PA) scored on a wild pitch from starter Devon Jerrard.

Hocker added an RBI single in the third and freshman Joseph Santone (Blackwood, NJ) ripped a two-run triple in the fourth for a 6-0 margin.

Trailing 6-1 entering the last of the seventh, the Seahawks scored six runs in the final inning for an unbelievable win.  Matt Holdefer lined a two-run double, Jared Eaker and Corey Napier each added a two-out RBI double and Zach Nadolny had a run-scoring single for a 6-6 tie.  Alex Lenovitz then singled, Brad Dioguardo walked to load the bases and Luke Green drew a walk to force home the winning run.

Widener (0-2) wasted a great effort from Orefield, PA senior Nicholas Moeltner, who was making his debut in blue and gold.  He gave up four runs – two earned – and seven hits with two strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings in a tough no-decision.

Hocker ended the contest with two of the Pride's four hits.

Sam Coe (1-0) got the win in relief, firing two scoreless frames.

The Seahawks (3-2) in game two scored three times in the bottom of the third for a 3-1 cushion.  Eaker lined a two-run double to give the home squad the lead for good and Napier followed with an RBI double.

The margin grew to 4-1 in the fifth when Lenovitz drew a bases-loaded walk.

Widener got its run in the second when Noyalis reached on a fielder's choice that plated Hocker.

Brookhaven, PA junior Glenn Stanners (0-1) permitted four runs – three earned – and six hits over 4 2/3 innings for the Pride.  Hocker got the visitor's only hit of the contest.

Wick Eisenberg (1-0) gave up an unearned run and one hit over seven innings for the Seahawks.  Eaker and Napier had two hits apiece.

Widener begins its six-game Florida trip next Sunday against Merchant Marine, starting at 1:00 pm in Fort Myers.
