Three Widener Teams in Action Competing for Conference Titles This Week

Widener sends three teams into the fray this weekend as they battle for conference championships.

The second-seeded women's basketball team is home Wednesday in the Commonwealth Conference semifinals against No. 3 seed Lebanon Valley.  Game time at Schwartz Center is 6:00 pm and tickets are $6 for adults, $4 for seniors, $2 for non-Widener students and free for Widener students and those under age six.

The Middle Atlantic Conference men's and women's track and field championships take place Saturday on the campus of Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA.  The meet begins at 10:00 am.

The women's basketball team (21-4, 16-2 CC) is in the conference tournament for the sixth straight year and already has set the school record for most overall wins and most conference wins in a season.  The squad, fifth in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region Rankings, has won nine straight contests and is hosting a conference tournament game for the first time since 1983.

Senior Kate Dellinger (Wrightsville, PA), a fourth team Preseason All-America by D3Hoops.com, has given Widener great play for four years and also has gotten the job done in the classroom.  She is ninth in the conference with 12.0 points per game, sixth with 9.0 rebounds per contest, tied for sixth with 2.0 steals per game and fifth with 31.7 minutes per contest.  Dellinger last year was picked second team Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-America, becoming the 45th so honored in Widener history, as well as WBCA Honorable Mention All-America and the conference player of the year.

Junior Jennifer Egee (Ridley Park, PA) has blossomed this season into one of the country's pre-eminent 3-point shooters.  She is 31st in the nation with 2.4 three-pointers per game, seventh in the conference with 12.5 points per contest, 19th with a .403 shooting percentage and eighth with a .345 three-point percentage.

Senior Lil Carney (Narberth, PA) rounds out the double-figure scorers and also has been a staple at guard.  The first team all-league pick in 2010 and 2011 is 13th with 10.5 points per game, 16th with 5.2 rebounds per contest, second with 4.3 assists per contest, 10th with a .655 free throw percentage, ninth with 1.9 steals per contest and sixth with a 1.2 assist-to-turnover ratio.

The winner faces Messiah, Elizabethtown or Lycoming on Saturday in the final for a berth into the NCAA Tournament.

The men's track and field team has won three straight indoor titles and is looking to become the first team to win four in a row since Elizabethtown won five consecutive crowns from 2004-08.

The men's 4x200-meter relay team has won three straight titles and sophomore Gavin Colley (Tunkhannock, PA) is back on the squad to try to make it four in a row.  Colley also was second in the 60-meter dash and third in the 200-meter dash last year.

Sophomore Michael Ciavarelli (Secane, PA) is the reigning champion in the 400-meter dash, as is senior Ryan Gallagher (Langhorne, PA) in the 5,000-meter run.  Junior Dennis Nguyen (Springfield, PA) was second in the pole vault for the second straight year, tying for first but losing on a judge's decision, and sophomore Mike Recla (Bloomsburg, PA) was second in the shot put.

Sophomore Brittany Diehl (Havertown, PA) returns after closing second in the 400-meter dash last season.  Junior Erica Szpynda (Berwick, PA), one of the nation's best in the shot put, was third by losing on a judge's decision after ending tied for second.

The women's 4x200 meter relay team and the 4x400-meter relay squad each ended third last year and both look to score big points this season.  This year's version of the 4x200-meter team was second at Ursinus and included Diehl, sophomore Jaclyn Miller (Media, PA), junior Colleen Spiller (Flemington, NJ) and freshman Shakeira Fowler (Philadelphia, PA).  The 4x400-meter squad also was second at Ursinus and was comprised of Brianna Englert (Pottsville, PA), fellow freshman Taylor Englert (Pottsville, PA), freshman Erica Trofa (Upper Chichester, PA) and senior Ashley Callahan (Clementon, NJ).
