Men’s Basketball Uses Balanced Attack to Notch 1,200th Victory in Program History, 86-75 over Leb Val

(box score)

An offensive-minded second half, combined with some impressive defense, went Widener's way as it used a run midway through the stanza for an 86-75 Commonwealth Conference triumph over Lebanon Valley at Schwartz Center.

A slow first half and early second half changed when Widener scored 16 straight points to open a 67-51 lead with 9:03 remaining. Junior Greg Lawson (Mount Holly, NJ) netted seven points in that span and senior Rob McPherson (Bowie, MD) capped it with a steal and a thunderous dunk.

The Pride's defense also was key, holding the Dutchmen without a field goal for almost seven minutes until Kevin Agnew drained a 3-pointer with 5:10 left for a 73-62 contest.

Lawson again went on a tear, getting his fifth double-double of the season by halftime and ending with a career-high 23 points on 9-of-10 shooting to go with 16 rebounds. McPherson also poured in 23 points, sophomore Laron Byrd (Philadelphia, PA) scored 17 and junior Dillon Fields (Medford, NJ) added 10 for the Pride (6-2, 1-1 CC)

Widener shot 59 percent (17-of-29) from the floor in the second half, 48 percent (30-of-63) for the game, owned a 46-28 overall rebounding edge and outscored LVC 44-26 in the paint.

Agnew closed with 26 points on 8-of-17 shooting, Kyler Burke had 15 and nine rebounds with Kevin Donahue netting 14 points for the Dutchmen (1-5, 0-2).

The victory was the 1,200th in the storied 104-year history of the program. Widener, which has won 15 Middle Atlantic/Commonwealth Conference titles and has played in the NCAA Tournament 17 times, is 1,200-855 all time.

Widener is back in action next Saturday, when it hosts Albright at 3:00 pm for another league tilt.
