Women's Soccer Rallies Twice For 2-2 Tie vs. Arcadia

(box score)

Senior Amanda Doran (Philadelphia, PA) capped a wild night by scoring with 10 seconds left in regulation to help Widener forge a mammoth 2-2 Commonwealth Conference draw with Arcadia at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.

In a matchup of two of the top teams in the league, Arcadia opened the scoring in the 65th minute in which all four goals were scored in the second half. Kim Canfield had the ball on the right side and crossed it for Fatima Elmedkhar, who headed one inside the right post for her fifth goal of the year.

Widener then leveled things at 1-1 with 7:03 remaining. Junior Jenna Pedrick (Sicklerville, NJ) lofted a corner kick for senior Karen Thomas (Mullica Hill, NJ), who placed a header just under the cross bar for her league-leading 16th goal of the season.

The 16 goals puts Thomas in a tie for second with Chris Peklak (1998) and assistant coach Sam Baer (2007) for the second most in a season in school history. Her 38 points this year is the fourth most in school history.

The Knights looked like they had things won with 4:53 remaining, when it took a 2-1 lead. Canfield dribbled down the left side and shot a cross to Lennon Kramer, who headed one in for her 13th goal of the year.

That was just before Widener provided the dramatics. Senior Victoria Batter (Woodlyn, PA) fired a shot that went off the crossbar to Doran, who fired one in from 12 yards for her first career goal and a 2-2 tie.

The Pride held a 3-1 edge in shots in overtime and senior Valarie Perretti (Clayton, NJ) was called upon to make one save off a header from Elmedkhar in the first extra period.

Perretti made 13 saves and Thomas had six shots for the Pride, who ended with a 19-17 shots edge.

Kramer amassed six shots and Jackie Law made nine saves for the Knights.

The draw puts Widener (13-1-2, 3-1-1 CC) in third place in the conference, just one point in back of Arcadia (10-1-4, 3-0-2). The league's top five teams advance to the conference tournament.

Widener returns to action next Wednesday to visit Albright, starting at 7:00 pm.
