Field Hockey Drops Overtime Decision to Elizabethtown, 1-0

(box score)

Widener held Elizabethtown to no goals in 70 minutes of regulation, but a goal nine minutes into overtime gave the visitors a 1-0 Commonwealth Conference victory at Edith R. Dixon Field.

Widener (4-11, 0-6 CC) entered into homecoming weekend pumped up and ready to face the first-place team in the league.

Junior goalie Maggie Karmeris (Wilmington, DE) made seven saves in the first half to keep the score 0-0 at halftime. Karmeris finished the day with 11 saves.

In the second half, the game switched from Widener's defense holding off the opposing offense to its offense getting scoring opportunities. Elizabethtown's shots and corner were cut in half from the first half to the second.

Twenty minutes into the second half, senior Samantha Balonis (Northumberland, PA) registered the best chance of either team to net a goal in regulation. Balonis took a shot from the right side that rung the left post and then traveled out of bounds.

Defenders freshman Dana Adamson (Warrington, PA) and senior Hannah Dinsmore (Wayne, PA) each took one shot on the day and also were the dominant forces of the Pride defense.

Sophomore captain Ashley Aires (Bayville, NJ) recorded her third defensive save on the year with a game-saving play late in the second half.

In overtime, Elizabethtown received two penalty corners one right after the other. Karmeris stopped the first one, but when the Blue Jays (10-4, 5-0) were awarded another Jacki Hikes was able to win the game and keep the visitors undefeated in conference play.

Widener will be back in action on Wednesday at 7:30 pm in a non-conference game at Muhlenberg.
