Field Hockey Dominates In 2-0 Win Over Goucher

(box score)

Freshman Maddie Price (Jarrettsville, MD) picked a perfect time for her first collegiate goal and junior Mackenzie Lindquist (Ocean City, NJ) also tallied in the second half for Widener, which rolled to a 2-0 victory over Goucher at Edith R. Dixon Field.

The first half begged the question when Widener was going to score. The Pride owned a 5-1 edge in shots and had a 7-1 advantage in penalty corners, but the Gophers' defense held tough and left the scoreboard empty at halftime.

That was until Price's heads-up play gave Widener a 1-0 lead. A Goucher defender had a very slow restart by her cage and Price was there to pounce on the loose ball, scoring in the 50th minute that had most wondering what just happened.

Lindquist gave the Pride some breathing room in the 55th minute. Senior Samantha Balonis (Northumberland, PA) had the ball on the right near the end line and fed a great pass to Lindquist, who put it inside the right post for her second goal of the year.

Lindquist, senior Katie Ferguson (Glen Mills, PA), sophomores Meghan Garvey (Avondale, PA) and Ashley Aires (Bayville, NJ) as well as freshman Dana Adamson (Warrington, PA) each had two shots for Widener (4-6), which closed with a 12-1 edge to go with a 13-1 advantage in penalty corners. Freshman Mikayla Ninos (Northampton, PA) did not have to make a save in playing just the second half.

"(Monday) we had talked about October being a new month," Widener coach Larissa Gillespie said. "It's nice to put together a whole team effort and come up with a win. Maddie just made a smart play and we worked on free hits (Monday). The shot Mackenzie scored on we worked on (Monday). The team effort and carrying things from practice, I was very happy with. It was nice to get a shutout also. It was nice to only give up one defensive corner and play smarter defense."

Emily Gill had Goucher's only shot, Antonia DiLuca made a defensive save and Demie Huffman amassed six saves for the Gophers (3-6).

Widener is on the road Saturday to visit 13th-ranked Messiah in Commonwealth Conference play. Game time is 1:00 pm.
