Men's Basketball Handed Tough 68-65 Loss by Alvernia

(box score)

Widener turned a double-digit deficit into an exciting contest, but in the end was dealt a 68-65 Commonwealth Conference setback by Alvernia at Schwartz Center.

Alvernia (9-3, 4-2 CC) scored five straight points to take its biggest lead, 59-49, with 4:09 remaining.  Kahlil Bennett had all of the points in that spurt, ending it with a pair of free throws.

Widener (4-10, 3-4) then began to chip away, closing to 59-54 with 3:08 to play after junior Rodney Brown (Lake Valley, NJ) canned a 3-pointer.  After the Crusaders built the lead to 61-54, junior Andrew Radomicki (Media, PA) drilled a 3-pointer with 1:42 remaining for a four-point deficit.

The margin stayed between four and six points for almost a minute until Widener junior Bob Makor (Philadelphia, PA) made a layup with 39 seconds to play for a 65-63 deficit.

Chris Davis, a 50 percent free throw shooter for Alvernia, made 1-of-2 from the line with 33 seconds left for a 66-63 game.  Widener went for the two with plenty of time remaining, but freshman David Nicholson (Odenton, MD) missed a layup and Alvernia's Brian Parker got the rebound.

Parker made 1-of-2 from the stripe with 16 seconds to play for a 67-63 contest.  Brown went for a 3-pointer and missed, but Makor got the rebound and subsequent layup with three seconds remaining for a two-point game.

Bennett was then fouled with 1.9 seconds left and looked to ice the contest, but kept Widener in it as he missed the first and made the last for a 68-65 game.  The Pride had no timeouts and looked for the tie, but Makor stepped inbounds before making a long pass for a turnover.

Fields scored 12 points -- all in the first half -- and Brown added 10 for the Pride, who shot 47 percent (27-of-58) from the field but were only 5-for-15 from the line.  Radomicki scored nine points with Makor and senior Adam Ahern (West Grove, PA) adding eight apiece.

Terrance Bridgers poured in 17 points, Parker and Bennett netted 14 apiece with Harrison Deyo adding 11 for the Crusaders, who shot 48 percent (22-of-46) from the field.

Widener hits the road Saturday to visit Hood for a 3:00 pm start in Frederick, MD.
