Swimming Wins Over Elizabethtown For Senior Day

Widener swimming celebrated its five seniors -- Ray Conover (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ), Hayley Conover (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ), Kelsey Lake (Ijamsville, MD), Rachel Lewinson (West Windsor, NJ) and Tara Strus (Glenolden, PA) -- today at home and secured two Middle Atlantic Conference victories over Elizabethtown, with the women winning 147-85 and the men notching a 132-103 win.
 
The women (8-3, 6-0 MAC) finished the meet with nine individual victories and eight individual second place finishers. There were four different events in which Widener touch in as the top three finishers, and three other events with first and second place times.
 
Lake was victorious in both the 100 and 200-yard freestyle -- finishing with times of 55.59 and 2:00.97 -- and Kaitlin Harnish (Havertown, PA) placed second in both the 100 and 200-yard backstroke with times of 1:07.54 and 2:24.81.
 
Colleen Tighe (Linwood, NJ) took both the 1,000-yard freestyle in 11:18.81 and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:33.38 with Jennifer Barkofski (Norristown, PA) and Alicia Jenkins (Downingtown, PA) taking second and third in the 1,000 and Sara Leonelli (Vineland, NJ) and Jenkins finishing second and third in the 500. Tighe also finished third in the 50-yard freestyle in 27.88, with Carly Wray (Ocean View, NJ) touching in just ahead with a time of 26.90, good for second. Wray also finished second in the 100-yard freestyle in 59.20.
 
Barkofski added two individual victories to her day, taking the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:12.68 and the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:39.64. Leonelli and Kerry McIntyre (Wilmington, DE) took second and third in the 100-yard breaststroke with Hayley Conover and McIntyre following Barkofski in the 200-yard breaststroke by finishing second and third, respectively.
 
Laura Harris (Phoenix, MD) took first in both the 200-yard butterfly in 2:20.08, which was about 30 seconds ahead of the nearest competitor, and the 200-yard backstroke in 2:16.82. Annie Walker (New Castle, DE) took the 100-yard backstroke in 1:05.85.
 
The men's squad (5-6, 4-2) notched eight individual wins and finished second in six individual events, finishing with the top two times in both the 100 and 200-yard freestyle and taking hold of the top three times in the 50-yard freestyle.
 
The 50-yard freestyle was owned by the Pride, with Ray Conover taking first with a time of 23.25, William Gelgot (Lebanon, PA) taking second in 24.10, and Andrew Olchowecky (Philadelphia, PA) closing touching in third in 24.17. Gelgot and Olchowecky also combined for a one-two punch in the 100-yard freestyle, with Gelgot touching in at 52.08 and Olchowecky close behind with a final time of 52.33.
 
With a time of 1:52.27, Gelgot notched another individual win in the 200-yard freestyle, with Michael Lawley (Philadelphia, PA) touching in second with a time of 1:53.77. Lawley won the 200-yard backstroke by about a six-second margin with a time of 2:06.62, while Olchowecky finished second in the 100-yard backstroke in 58.38.
 
Andy Madore (State College, PA) won by at least four seconds in three different events, taking the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:04.96, the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:24.63 and the 200-yard IM in 2:13.85. Vadim Belogorodsky (Huntingdon Valley, PA) won the 500-yard freestyle by less than one-half of a second with a time of 5:14.56. Stephen Ranalli (Wildwood, NJ) missed taking first in two events by less than one second, finishing second in both the 100-yard butterfly in 1:00.64 and the 200-yard butterfly in 2:21.80.
 
Widener waits for February 8-10 to compete in the MAC Championships in Wilkes-Barre, PA.
