Six Goals from Johnny Casey Not Enough For Men's Lacrosse in Double OT Loss to Albright

(box score)

Senior Johnny Casey (Abington, PA) scored a career-high six goals for Widener, but the home team allowed TJ Holston's marker 1:49 into the second overtime for a tough 11-10 Commonwealth Conference loss to Albright at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.

Down 9-7 entering the fourth quarter, Widener (2-7, 0-1 CC) turned to Casey for help and he delivered.  He scored with 12:55 left off a pass from sophomore Bobby Clemens (Aston, PA) and again with 10:59 remaining off a feed from senior Ryan Shewell (Ellicott City, MD) for a 9-9 tie.

Holston came through the first time for the Lions with 7:30 left for a 10-9 lead.  The Pride responded less than two minutes later as Casey scored for a team season high in goals and a 10-10 draw.

Each team had chances in the first overtime.  Albright's Justin Brown had a shot saved by sophomore Mac Nestler (Chatham, NJ) and Widener had four shots in a row that missed the target.

Albright (11-1, 1-0) in the second overtime saw Holston's first good chance in the period saved by Nestler, but Dan Foote got a huge ground ball behind the net.  The ball then was loose in front and made its way to Holston, who on his back put one home to give the Lions their fifth straight win.

Casey fell one point short of matching his career high.  Clemens ended with six assists and senior Mark Kane (Morton, PA) had a goal and an assist for the Pride, who had their 16-game winning streak against Middle Atlantic/Commonwealth Conference foes snapped.  Nestler ended with 10 saves in just under 36 minutes.

Holston had four goals, Phil Potter notched two and five assists with Justin Brown getting two goals for the Lions.  Andrew Torak made 12 saves in just under 66 minutes.

Widener looks to regroup Tuesday at Alvernia, beginning at 7:00 pm in Reading, PA.
