Softball Rallies for Two Wins Over Cabrini

(Game 1) / (Game 2)

Casey Hargadon (Wallingford, PA) lifted the winning sacrifice fly in the ninth inning of game one and fellow junior Jess Way (Marlton, NJ) had the go-ahead single in the sixth inning of game two for Widener, which recorded victories of 7-6 and 3-2 over Cabrini in Chester, PA.

Widener (18-14) in game one used some two-out magic in the bottom of the seventh to plate two runs for a 4-4 tie.  Hargadon lined an RBI single to center that scored freshman Taylor Shultz (Parker Ford, PA) and junior Shelby Mackintosh (Lumberton, NJ) followed with a single through the left side that plated junior Jody Salvatore (Williamstown, NJ).

Cabrini (15-19) took a 5-4 lead in the top of the eighth when a fielding error off a grounder from Sammy Thompson allowed Stephanie Diegel to score.  But the never-say-die Pride again came through with two outs as Shultz lined a single to right-center field that scored Way for a 5-5 tie.

The Cavaliers grabbed the lead in the ninth.  Lindsey Atzert was placed on second base per international rules and took third on a sacrifice from Ryan McDonough.  She then scored on a perfect squeeze bunt from Angela Shookster for a 6-5 contest.

But Widener finally ended things in the bottom of the frame.  Junior Colleen Orsborn (Drexel Hill, PA) was placed on second and scored on a long double from freshman Carissa Harris (Douglassville, PA) to tie the game.  Harris was then sacrificed to third by Salvatore and scored on Hargadon's sacrifice fly to right.

Delran, NJ sophomore Jackie Korang (9-7) gave up six runs – three earned – and 10 hits over nine innings for the Pride.  Hargadon closed with three RBI.

Marcelle Crist (7-10) allowed seven runs – four earned – and 12 hits over 8 2/3 innings for the Cavaliers.  Thompson had two RBI.

Cabrini in game two grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first on a triple from Atzert, who scored on an errant throw.  Thompson's double to left-center field in the fifth doubled the lead.

But Widener, true to its form all day, rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth.  Salvatore lined an RBI double to left-center field that scored Orsborn, who led off with a single.  Salvatore went to third and a bad throw from catcher Rebecca Miles bounced into left field that allowed her to score for a 2-2 tie.

Hargadon followed with a double, Mackintosh singled her to third and Way gave Widener its first lead of the game with a single to right.

Drexel Hill, PA junior Christine Mattis (8-5) surrendered two runs – one earned – and six hits over seven innings for the Pride.  Hargadon had two hits and is riding a career-best 10-game hitting streak.

Missy Miller (7-9) suffered a tough loss after retiring the first seven batters of the game and not allowing a hit until the fourth inning.  She was tagged for three runs and six hits over six innings.

Diegel amassed two hits for the Cavaliers.

The doubleheader marked the fifth straight year Widener hosted “Strike Out Cancer Night.”  Raffles were held and baked goods were sold with all proceeds benefitting The Wister Institute Melanoma Research Center.

Widener is home Thursday against Eastern, starting at 5:00 pm.
